The documentary was eye-opening to a topic that is not often discussed or thought of until faced with a choice or situation. It was interesting to see how individual and family desires intertwine with medical care. In addition to discussing topics like hospice care, palliative care, and medical interventions' limitations, it highlights the importance of open and honest conversations about end-of-life preferences and goals. It has changed my perception of end-of-life issues and how medical professionals approach them. I found it very emotional overall to see that many families and patients held a lot of hope in the idea of recovering, as well as to see how medical professionals can give patients and their families false hope or try treatments more so for the family's reassurance than the treatment actually aiding in recovery. I think often we forget that healthcare providers are human and are not medical robots that have a hard time dealing with these complex emotional situations. Additionally, it made me think about myself and my family members as far as establishing a plan or sharing my preferences. Overall, my perspective did change and was able to see that healthcare providers can better help patients navigate end-of-life issues by Open and honest communication, Active listening, Shared decision-making, Palliative care and symptom management, Advance care planning, Coordination of care, Emotional support, and overall healthcare professional Education and training in all of the above. Ultimately, the documentary emphasizes patient autonomy and aligning medical care with individual preferences. This is even if it means shifting the focus from aggressive treatments to improving quality of life instead. As a whole, "Being Mortal" sparks meaningful conversations about end-of-life choices, inspiring us to rethink how we look at death, aging, and illness.
