CODING BASICS CPT & HCPCS  HCPCS - Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System “hic pic”  HCPCS is used for supplies, equipment, and medications .  ex: wheelchair, gauze, anything used in a same day surgery, medications given, etc.  Divided into Level I and Level II  Level I = CPT  Level II – HCPCS  CPT - Current Procedural Terminology  Is a part of the HCPCS coding system, also known as HCPCS Level I  Outpatient/ambulatory medical services and procedures.  Think “something a physician personally does.”  CPT also has radiology, path, and lab.  ex: office visit, lesion removal, same day surgery in hospital, cbc testing, etc. ICD-10-CM & ICD-10-PCS  ICD-10 CM - International Classification of Diseases, 10 th revision, Clinical Modification .  Its called “clinical modification” because it’s the United States clinical modification of the World Health Organization’s ICD-10 used worldwide. The US has our version which is the ICD-10-CM  Used by everyone in the US to code for diagnoses to report diagnoses .  Diagnoses- illnesses/diseases/conditions/injuries that cause a patient to seek medical treatment.  Think, what the patient is sick with, or what they are coming into the office/hospital/clinic for (the reason they need medical services)  ICD-10 PCS- International Classification of Diseases, 10 th revision, Procedure Coding System  World health organization’s coding nomenclature (coding system) that the US added the PCS (procedure coding system) portion to.  Inpatient hospital procedure coding.  These are patients that are admitted as inpatient hospital patients getting procedures.  You would code their diagnoses (reason they need the procedure) with the ICD-10-CM and the procedure they are having with the ICD-10 PCS  CPT = Procedures (outpatient)  HCPCS = Supplies  ICD- CM = Diagnoses (everyone)  ICD- PCS = Procedures (inpatient)
