Research Worksheet #2: Analyzing a Primary Source Due Monday March 20 by 11:59 pm 1). Contextualizing the Source: Using Monday’s lecture (March 13) , write a 3-4 sentence description of Ibn Sina’s life. Write this so that someone who has never heard of Ibn Sina could read the description and get a sense of who he is and why he’s important. Ibn Sina was a scholar that traveled throughout Central Asia for most of his life. Ibn Sina had one of the greatest contributions to early medicine in the Islamic and European world. Ibn Sina’s Canon of Medicine is one the most influential medical books studied by scholars around the world. The Canon of Medicine was used as the main texts studied by medical schools for centuries, up until the 1700s. 2). Thesis statement (i.e., an argument): carefully read over the two thesis statements below. Select one of them. Write 3-4 sentences on why you chose this thesis statement and how the context (question 1) will help you to understand and analyze this statement. Thesis statement #1: Scientists in the medieval Islamic world had a sophisticated understanding of the human body, sharing many similarities with those held in modern medicine. Thesis statement #2: By writing about medical advice for travelers, Ibn Sina documented and shared medical knowledge that was important for supporting connections between different parts of the Islamic world. I agree with this thesis statement 1. I will use the context from question 1 to explain how Ibn Sina’s Canon of Medicine was important for the understanding of medical knowledge around the Islamic world. I will also explain how early medical knowledge was similar to that of modern medicine. 3). Finding evidence/relevant examples: Closely read the excerpt from Ibn Sina’s Canon of Medicine (posted in the Week 9 Module) and identify 2 examples that support one of the thesis questions above. Write a very brief (1-2 sentence) description of the example and include a page reference for the page where it appears, i.e. One example is that to preserve health and stay healthy, people should be exercising regularly. Exercise will help the body eliminate excess fat in the body (pages 264-265). Another example is being protected against the sun when traveling in hot climates by covering their heads from the sun and applying something on their chest and head as a way to be protected from the sun (pages 311-312). 4). Matching evidence and argument:
Write a one paragraph analysis using one of your examples to support the thesis statement you selected. Try to use specific language from the primary source by quoting snippets of text [i.e., Canon of Medicine offers instructions that would have benefited global travelers during the Islamic golden age. For instance, Ibn Sina advised travelers by sea should consume “fruits as quince, apple and pomegranate” as well as celery seeds to avoid nausea (p. 318)] One example of how early medicine knowledge and modern medicine knowledge share similarities is the acknowledgement of exercise. In the Canon of Medicine, Ibn Sina states many reasons and benefits of exercise, as well as the types of exercises to do. For instance, Ibn Sina explains that “Exercise makes organs flexible and soft, attenuates the fluids and dilates the pores of the skin” (page 265) to show how exercise benefits the body. Ibn Sina also states, “Exercise helps to expel the superfluity and divert it towards the outlet” (page 265).
