1/1 EMERGENCY MEDICINE RESEARCH STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE INTRODUCTION Regulatory authorities require that clinical research sites utilize standard operating procedures (SOP’s) to ensure that clinical research is conducted in a manner that protects the rights and safety of human subjects participating in research. The Emergency Medicine Research office will adhere to all applicable KGH policies regarding research including, but not limited to:  KGH 11-152 Standard Operating Procedures for Clinical Research  KGH 11-150 Health Research The Network of Networks (N2) is a national initiative that brings together multiple existing disease networks and other stakeholders willing to join forces to enhance Canada’s research capability and capacity. N2 was formed because clinical researchers face common challenges in their quest to conduct world class research. N2 provides the opportunity to speak to clinical research issues with one voice and offers a forum to develop and share tools, resources and best practices. Kingston General Hospital has adopted the N2 principles, and more specifically, all research conducted at KGH is to be conducted under the N2 SOP’s. The EMR office is no exception, however, not all the N2 SOP’s are applicable in the conduct of research in the Emergency setting; ergo 2 SOP binders exist; 1) N2 SOP’s binder exists to illustrate all current N2 SOP’s, and any exceptions are documented with that SOP 2) an EM Research Office SOP binder exists to document specific EMR practices that are more detailed than the N2 SOP. Only paper copies of current versions of the applicable N2 SOP’s will be kept in the EM Research office. Past versions of these can be accessed electronically or in the KGH Health Sciences Research Office. In addition to KGH policies, the EMR office will adhere to SOP’s maintained by Queen’s University Health Sciences Research Board. Paper copies of current applicable HSREB SOP’s can be accessed in the EMR research office. Electronic copies of these SOP’s will be accessible on the Queen’s HSREB website.
