Group 1 Discussion 5 Hello Everyone I hope you all have a great week/weekend! Looking at it from a Global perspective, there are so many cardiovascular diseases and risk factor that need to be taken into accountability. Especially when evaluating Baruti's diagnosis, of cardiovascular disease. Many factors can increase the risk of developing this disease it can be demographic (gender and age), genetics, (family), and or behavioral (lifestyle patterns). Any type of risk factor can be considered to increase the likely hood and developing coronary cardiovascular disease, the concurrence of multiple factors can seriously compound this probability. In Baruti's case, he is a farmer 67 years who is from Sudan, Men older than age 45 and women past menopause have the highest risk of a heart event. A family history of heart disease is a risk factor that you can’t directly control but that you should be aware of. It’s especially important to check with your doctor for an assessment if you have a father or brother who had heart disease before age 55, or a mother or sister who was diagnosed before age 65. (Johns Hopkins Medicine, 2023.) In Baruti case he is a farmer, being a farmer requires you to be physically active and diligent, you would think by him being this way, he has led a very health and active lifestyle, but what needs to be looked at is his age itself. This would be another factor of developing CVD. Having a history of CVD, and the majority of his male relatives passing away in their 40's and 50 plays into his situation right now. There are a range of conditions and illnesses linked to a genetic predisposition. These include certain cancers, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, asthma, celiac disease, and more. Researchers have also linked mental illnesses, autism, and even addiction to genetics. There is usually an external trigger like diet, environment, smoking, hormone changes, or severe illness. External factors are why one family member develops a disease, and the other does not. (Center for Family Medicine, 2023.) Baruti resides in Sudan, low literacy rates, a developing population, little to no access to nutritional knowledge. Sudan has a limit on healthcare access, which then makes it challenging for Baruti to obtain any type of information about CVD. Sudan has an ongoing battle with tuberculosis, they include laboratories of about 340 health centres that stopped checking TB due to the shortage of materials and staff, in addition to the poor awareness of the Sudanese about the disease, and the lack of support for TB patients from the state. The National Programme for Combating Tuberculosis needs at least $27 million, Abushama explained, and noted that the Global Support Fund guaranteed $13 million for three years to combat TB in the country. (Sudan: Tuberculosis on the Rise in Sudan, 2021.) He has not been feeling well over a week now, he has been experiencing weight loss, chronic cough, night sweats, and bloody sputum.
His test results showed he has tuberculosis, and has the possibility to spread TB to other people. Tuberculosis mostly affects adults in their most productive years. However, all age groups are at risk. Over 80% of cases and deaths are in low- and middle-income countries. TB occurs in every part of the world. In 2021, the largest number of new TB cases occurred in WHO’s South-East Asian Region (46%), followed by the African Region (23%) and the Western Pacific (18%). Around 87% of new TB cases occurred in the 30 high TB burden countries, with more than two thirds of the global total in Bangladesh, China, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and the Philippines. Globally, close to 1 in 2 TB-affected households face costs higher than 20% of their household income, according to latest national TB patient cost survey data. Those with compromised immune systems, such as people living with HIV, undernutrition or diabetes, or people who use tobacco, have a higher risk of falling ill. Globally in 2021, there were 2.2 million new TB cases that were attributable to undernutrition, 740 000 new TB cases worldwide were attributable to alcohol use disorder and 690 000 were attributable to smoking. (WHO, 2023.) Baruti being a farmer and traveling to different farms might increase the risk of contracting TB, not having or having trouble getting access to nutritional food and clean water as well. His diagnosis of TB, could also be because of the lack of healthcare resources in Sudan. Malnutrition and a weakened immune system is associated with TB, everything plays a part Baruti faces a serious threat because a lack of access to healthcare.
