1. You are babysitting for the little girl next door. She is teasing your dog and the dog bites her. There is a little bleeding and the wound appears to be swollen. First, I would assess the area where the girl was bitten. I would make sure that my dog is out of the area and out of reach of the little girl. By doing this, I am making sure that the girl is safe from the dog, preventing it from happening again while I am tending to the wound. After getting the dog out of the area, I would check the dog bite for broken skin and any other injuries. In this instance, there is a little bleeding and it’s swollen. Therefore, I don’t think I would need to call 911. The wound isn’t very severe and it’s not bleeding heavily. With that being said, I would ask her if it’s okay for me to clean the wound out with soap and water so that it doesn’t get infected, and then I would put a bandage over it. Lastly, I would probably ask her if she wanted some ice to put on her bite to reduce the swelling. 2. You walk downstairs and find your younger brother holding his hand. It is bleeding heavily. The laceration is deep and runs across the palm of his hand. Through his tears, he tells you that he cut his hand on a piece of glass. No one else is home. First, I would make sure that the area is safe, and that there is nothing else that can hurt him in the area. I would then check his consciousness and breathing due to the amount of blood that he is losing. Since no one else is home and the laceration appears severe, I would immediately call a family member or neighbor to get a ride to urgent care for treatment. After calling for help, I’d put on disposable gloves and tend to the wound. I would apply direct pressure to the wound with a clean cloth. I would also elevate his hand above his heart to reduce the bleeding. I would continue to apply pressure while driving with a family member or friend to urgent care for treatment. 3. A woman at the food court at the mall appears to be choking on a hamburger. She is turning blue in the face and cannot cough. I would quickly assess the area and yell to someone to call 911. Since the woman can’t cough or talk, I would perform the heimlich maneuver to dislodge the hamburger from her throat. If this doesn’t dislodge the hamburger and she becomes unconscious, I would lower her to the ground and start to perform CPR. I would continue this until the medical professionals arrive on scene. 4. A four-year-old boy was playing near a pool when you went into the house to take a phone call. When you came back outside, the boy was
lying face down in the water. The boy is not moving, coughing or breathing. I’d quickly make sure that the scene is safe, get the boy out of the water as fast as I could and lay him on his back. I would call 911 with my phone on speaker next to me, notifying them of a drowning and give them my location. I would listen and follow any instructions given to me, while performing CPR. I would continue to perform CPR until the medical professionals arrived or if the boy started to show signs of regaining consciousness.
