Boundaries: What defines the boundaries? Water, roads, railroads? Does the area have a name or nickname? The zip code of 20002 boundaries is defined by many large roads and the Anacostia River. The area may sometimes be referred to by its Ward or neighborhood. 20002 encompasses wards 2, 5, 6 and 7. Some of the neighborhoods in 20002 are Eckington, Edgewood, Noma, etc. Housing and Zoning: What is the age of the houses? What kind of materials are used in construction? Describe the housing including spaces between them, general appearance, and condition, and presence of central heating, air conditioning and modern plumbing. Most houses were built around 1900 to 1980, however newer housing is being constructed in the SE of 20002 i.e., Noma neighborhood (Malinowski, 2014). Most homes in 20002 are row homes or condos. There is very little space between them if any. There are some newer luxury apartments being constructed in the Noma neighborhood and on Rhode Island Ave. Almost all occupied homes and apartments have central heating, air conditioning and modern plumbing. Open Space: Describe the amount, condition, use of open space. How is the space used? Is it safe? Attractive? There are small pockets of open space. Most areas have been converted to parks and outdoor recreational areas. The areas during the day are relatively safe, however I personally wouldn’t hang out there after dar k due to the increasing number of homeless individuals and crime. An example of one of these areas is Crispus Attucks Park. It is usually a very clean park with a large green patch of grass and benches. At night, I have seen people sleeping and hanging out. Debris and garbage are very common to find on sidewalks around the neighborhood. There are not many abandoned cars but there are new construction projects which could hide rodents or other wildlife. One example is the McMillan project. Commons: Where do people in the neighborhood hang out? Who hangs out there and at what hours during the day? Many people in the neighborhood hang out at the local recreational parks. One example is the Edgewood recreation center. In the evenings many families play soccer and bring their children to the playground. There are signs for local farmers markets and upcoming community events around the neighborhood shops and restaurants. Many hybrid
employees work from small coffee shops during the day as well. Transportation: How do people get from one place to another? How timely is the transportation? Are there pedestrians? Does the area appear safe? 70% of people have a car for transportation. Another major source of transportation is the metro or other train systems. In 20002 there is 2 metro stops and union station which houses the Amtrak and the MARC. The train and metro systems are relatively timely. However, roadways tend to be very congested so DC commuters must allocate more time when driving. There are pedestrians in many areas but there are also many sidewalks and a large walking/ bike trail that stretches over 8 miles from Maryland to Noma. Lastly, 20002 has many buses to bring residents to all areas of the city. Social Service Centers: Do you see evidence of recreation centers, parks, social services, doctor’s offices, dentist, pharmacies ? There is 10+ recreational centers and parks, multiple doctors, dentists and pharmacies. Stores: Where do the residents shop? Do they have groceries or sources of fresh produce? Is this a food desert? There are many options for groceries including Whole Foods, Harris Teeter, and Giant. All these options source fresh produce. 20002 is not a food desert. Street people and animals: Who do you see on the streets during the day? Besides the people, do you see animals? Are they loose or contained? During the day you see many locals running errands and, in some areas, a large number of homeless individuals. Many locals have dogs that are leashed. Occasionally there are stray cats in the neighborhoods. At night in the alleys, you can find rats, especially on garbage day. As far as classes, the “upper and middle class” people tend to have more time during the day to run errands and perform leisurely activities such as a midday yoga class. The “working” class is usually seen in the evening hours out in the community, after their workday at grocery stores or taking their children to soccer. The “lower” class can be found at many church kitchens, or sometimes social service offices. Condition of the Area: Is the area well kept or is there evidence of trash, abandoned cars or houses? What kind of information is provided on the signs in the area? Primarily the area is well kept. The largest issue is trash. Many people leave trash in the alleys and fail to properly dispose of waste leading to contamination and poor conditions. Race and ethnicity: What is the racial mix of the people you see? What do you see about indices of ethnicity? Places of worship, food The zip code is primarily white but there is also a large population of African Americans. English is the most common language. There
stores, restaurants? Are the signs in English or other languages? are many Baptists, Catholic and a few non- denominational churches in my neighborhood (“2023 Demographics,” 2023). There is 2 African food and clothing stores and 1 Asian market. Religion: What indications do you see about the types of religion residents practice? There are multiple churches in the area and many people show their religious affiliation by placing symbols on their belongings such as crosses on their cars or nativity scenes around the holidays. 57% of people in 20002 are religious. 17.5% are Baptist and - 15.4% are Catholic (“ Religion in Zip 20002, Washington, DC ,” n.d.). Health indicators: Do you see evidence of clinics, hospitals, mental illness, and/or abuse? There are multiple clinics including Kaiser clinic, BridgePoint Hospital, and All Heart Medical Center. 70% of people in 20002 have taken blood pressure medication, 14.8% report poor mental health, 10% have asthma, 24.8% are obese, and 32.8% report insufficient sleep (“2023 Demographics,” 2023). Personally, in my community I see many individuals that appear to be suffering from some form of addiction. Politics: What indicators do you see about politics? Posters, headquarters? 20002 is very close to Capitol Hill. Many residents show their party affiliation by posting signage in their yards or even pasting flyers at local coffee shops. Media: Do you see indicators of what people read? If they watch television? Listen to the radio? Can you tell if residents use social media? Availability of internet? I am unsure what people read or watch on TV. Many people use the internet. There are many public internet outlets around the community including Starbucks, recreational centers, and schools. Social media is very prevalent in the area. Many people use social media to spread news, write reviews and communicate with others. The buses, trains and even rideshare services spread news using poster signage either on the top or side of the vehicle. Business and industry: What type of business climate exists? Manufactures? Large employers? Small business owners? Retail? Hospitality industry? Military installation? Do people have to seek employment elsewhere? The most prevalent jobs in 20002 are administration or tech jobs. There are many customer service positions are also available at local stores, restaurants, and hotels. There are more large employers than small, and less than 3% work in protection services. Most people in 20002 commute around 36 minutes to work. (“2023 Demographics,” 2023).
