In the United States, health care is one of the top three public concerns. Two of the biggest issues
with health care are how to reduce the costs and how to create a system with equity throughout
each process, which has led to a need for a shift in health care priorities within the United States.
Due to the complex health care system in the United States, changing any aspect of the system
has always been a slow and difficult process. In 2016, the National Academy of Medicine created
a plan to establish and guide the health care priorities. The established list highlights a set of
issues in need of more attention, which include early childhood and maternal health, health costs,
infectious disease threats, mental health, and addiction. By focusing on these issues, it would
help to empower people and the communities, as well as connecting care. The shift in health care
priorities also must help combat how the health disparities have affected minority groups but
especially the black community. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic also highlighted the
racial health inequalities within the health care system.
As the health care priorities shift within the United States, the impact of health inequalities has
highlighted the vulnerable populations like, older adults, children, and minority groups. It is
important that the priority shifts away from individuals with insurance and those who have the
ability to always pay for health care in order to move away from the inequalities in this system.
It is important for the government to establish and follow strategies that will help to address the
more serious issues withing the health care system. Both the state government and the federal
government must work together to correct the inequalities within the health care system. The
government has created policies in the past to address some of the changing priorities but many
times they have faced pushback from others in government or even state level government. For
instance, the Affordable Care Act of 2010 has been challenged many times at the federal and
state level, which is why it is important for the different levels of government to work together to
get these policies passed in a timely manner to have the greatest impact of the shift of health
priorities.
In the United States, the only way to have the health care system changed or updated is for the
policymakers to make the changes through their laws and policies, so it is important for them to
look into each issue as a matter of health care equality. The government has another issue when
deciding to focus on different priorities because it is difficult to determine where the resources
are going to come from to establish new policies because many times these resources are going
to have to be reduced in other areas to focus on the shift in health care priorities. However the
citizens are the true decision makers and getting them to understand and agree with the shift in
priorities will be the only way to get health care policies changed.
