Hi class, From your review of the NCCIH website you know that about 30% of adults engage with health care modalities not typically considered part of the conventional medical care model. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has been a common practice in Europe in recent decades. CAM has been broadly used for back pain, depression, headaches, insomnia, multiple sclerosis, cancer, and stomach or intestinal disorders. The use of CAM can be related to healthcare determinants such as culture, values, beliefs, religion, and trust in the healthcare provider; however, the use of alternative medicine can also be influenced by sociodemographic determinants such as poverty and isolation (Kemppainen et al., 2018). Kemppainen et al. (2018) stated that 26% of the Europe population uses CAM and noted higher use in Germany with 40%. These authors described some particularities in the use of CAM, such as higher use for musculoskeletal disorders among women with higher income and educational levels, opposite to the lower-income population who relies more on mind-body therapies for depression with poor combination with biological medicine. The determinants mentioned above must be considered in our future practice for the community's education and to ensure better access and quality of care for underserved, isolated, or low-income populations. The likelihood exists that either you or someone you know has utilized complementary, alternative, or integrative healthcare modalities. After the second episode of COVID-19, my wife was diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus, HTN, and idiopathic nephropathy that was leading to dialysis at a vertiginous speed. The nephrologist and endocrinologist placed her on multiple medications, including Farxiga, Ozempic, Metformin, Losartan, and other drugs for fibromyalgia pain management. After multiple conversations between my wife and myself, sleepless nights reading, and searching for an alternative approach, we decided to stop all those pharmacological treatments and start or try a strictly vegan regimen emphasizing anti- inflammatory nutrients. After a few weeks, the glycemia was always borderline to hypoglycemic values, and the nephropathy was resolved with normal creatinine, GFR, and UA results. Additionally, she lost some weight and improved her overall status, including energy levels and general symptoms. This represents a case where the use of alternative medicine alone (nutritional approach) was more effective than the use of medications and occidental medicine. Reflect on one of those non-conventional modalities that you have experience with. My wife's non-conventional modality has demonstrated obvious advantages over traditional medicine, including the lack of side effects and the lower
cost (less expenses in medications, visits to providers, procedures, and lab tests). However, this anecdotical case cannot be used as a guide for caring for patients with similar diagnoses. Construct a discussion of that experience utilizing the PDSA model schemata. The use of the PDSA model applies perfectly to my wife's situation. First, we noticed the failure of the pharmacological and specialized medicine approach. We studied other alternatives to confront her health issues, and we started the alternative approach and stopped the medications. She wasn't taking any medication and was symptom-free in less than three weeks. After this, we executed the plan to start a strict vegan and anti- inflammatory diet, and finally, we analyzed and compared the excellent results of this alternative approach. Support elements of the 'Plan' aspect with appropriate information from scholarly resources. Plants have been used to treat diseases since ancient times. The effectiveness of functional foods for health protection has been recently studied and demonstrated the antioxidant effect of multiple phytochemicals presented in plants. For example, multiple studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of the seeds and fruit of the plant Jamun for treating metabolic syndrome, DM, HTN, CAD, obesity, and hyperlipidemia (Maryam et al., 2022). Compare the 'Study' aspect with findings from scholarly resources. A plant-based diet is associated with numerous health benefits however is not exempt from risks such as Vit B12 deficit. Jeitler et al. (2022) recognized the need for further studies regarding the need for Vit B12 monitoring. They described the importance of Vit B12 supplementation on strict vegans to avoid the risk of severe or irreversible complications secondary to its deficit. References Jeitler, M., Storz, M.
