Lesson Overview
This course, Small and Large Animal Medicine, has introduced you to some of the
diseases you may encounter as a veterinary technician. You should be familiar with these
and many other diseases that commonly affect the animals treated in veterinary medicine.
You should become adept at researching information—both for your own use (continuing
your education) and for client education purposes. In this graded project, you’ll research
and discuss unique diseases in veterinary medicine.

Follow the instructions provided to complete your exam.
Be sure to keep a backup copy of any files you submit to the school!
Overview
When you research any disease, your aim should be to determine its etiology, signs and
symptoms, diagnostic tools, treatment protocols, and any prevention and control programs
available. To protect yourself and others, it's also important to note any zoonotic or
occupational safety potentials when working on animals with certain diseases.
As you continue in your career, you'll need to familiarize yourself with research methods for
veterinary topics. Rewriting information in your own words also can help you assimilate the
information. Developing confidence in analyzing, interpreting, and understanding the
material you find will be an asset regardless of the direction your career takes.
At some point in your career, you may have the opportunity to present information to a
group: clients, coworkers, attendees at continuing education seminars, or the general
public. Knowing how to research and prepare a PowerPoint presentation will be helpful in
this context, as PowerPoint is used frequently to deliver information to groups of people.

There are two components to this research project:
1. A written research paper
2. A PowerPoint presentation to accompany the research paper
Part 1: Research Paper
Your research paper must discuss a total of 10 unique diseases encountered in veterinary
medicine. A list is provided in the following paragraphs that outlines diseases you may
select as research topics.
When selecting your 10 diseases, please take into account the following criteria.
Species classifications—Your paper must include two diseases for each of the following
species:
1. Canine
2. Feline
3. Equine
4. Ruminant or swine
5. Exotics (can include avian, amphibian, reptile, or pocket pets)
Disease classifications—Choose the type and number of diseases as listed below:
1. Infectious/contagious (2)
2. Parasitic (2)
3. Immune-mediated (1)
4. Congenital/genetic (1)
5. Neoplastic (1)
6. Metabolic (1)
7. Toxic (1)
8. Degenerative or idiopathic (1)
For each disease that you research, please include the following information:
1. Causative agent/organism or mechanism
2. Main species a²ected
3. Select one species and discuss in detail the e²ects on that species.
4. Brie³y mention other species that can be a²ected.
5. Clinical signs and symptoms as well as secondary signs or associated conditions
6. Diagnostic tests, including how the results of those tests con´rm a diagnosis
7. Treatment and prognosis
8. Prevention and control programs

9. Vaccination—If there's a vaccine available for the disease, explain the vaccine type used, its protocol, and how it
works to create immunity. Discuss potential complications, failure of the immune response, and why that failure
might occur.
10. Zoonotic potential—If the disease has zoonotic potential, describe the occupational safety measures that need to
be taken while in contact with the diseased animal. Also, discuss educating owners on safety when they're caring
for a pet with a zoonotic disease.
11. Contagious spread—When discussing infectious diseases, explain how to prevent them from spreading to other
animals in the hospital or herd.
Please select your ten diseases from the following list.
