You did a wonderful job on our discussion board post this week discussing the reasons why the United States spends more on healthcare than other comparable nations. The fact that the United States spends more per capita on healthcare than other nations with less positive outcomes is concerning. “The researchers determined that the higher overall health care spending in the U.S. was due mainly to higher prices—including higher drug prices, higher salaries for doctors and nurses, higher hospital administration costs and higher prices for many medical services.”(Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, 2019) I agree with your statement that the increased
expenditures are due to factors such as higher provider reimbursement rates, pharmaceutical pricing practices, and the absence of government price controls. “According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, in 2023, the average cost of employer-sponsored health insurance rose 7%, to nearly $24,000 per year for family coverage.” (Kellermann, 2023) “Even if per capita prescription drug pricing is lowered and closer to that of comparable countries, that difference would make only a dent in the overall difference in health spending.” (Kurani & Cox, 2020) Another point you presented was that preventative care neglect leads to increased healthcare expenditures. I agree with this statement whole-heartedly, because if a consumer is diagnosed earlier, their disease can be managed and maintained properly. When a condition is not monitored and treated properly, it does become a chronic, difficult to manage disease. Emergency room visits and hospitalizations are expensive. In the United States, 90% of the $4.1 trillion in annual health care expenditures are for people with chronic and mental health conditions.(CDC, 2020) Jeremiah 33:6 says, “Nevertheless, I will bring health and healing to it; I will heal my people and will let them enjoy abundant peace and security.” (The NIV Study Bible., 2007) Consumers are delaying medical care due to the increased prices for basic healthcare. While other countries are providing Universal healthcare for their population,
the United States has missed the mark on this. "Our current system is inequitable, does not adequately cover vulnerable groups, is cost prohibitive,
and lacks the flexibility to respond to periods of economic and health downturns." (American Public Health Association, 2020) Healthcare is inaccessible to many Americans. When it comes down to making decisions about paying for food instead paying for healthcare, that is concerning. Proverbs 27:23 tell us, "Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds" (
The NIV Study Bible.
, 2007) It is evident that
our multi-fragmented healthcare system needs a wakeup call. “During the 1980s, a consensus emerged that the US healthcare system needed to be redirected despite its many triumps.” (Lee, 2015) Drivers of change are necessary to achieve this.
