Horizon Scan on Preventative Medicine
Preventative medicine is a specialty that prevents disease, conditions, and deaths in patients. Some examples are sexually transmitted disease (STD) screenings, cancer screenings, vaccinations, and diabetes screening. Preventative medicine is a growing specialty that improves the well-being of patients. Horizon scan “aims to systematically identify upcoming health technologies and thus allows policy-
makers to be better prepared for the entry of new medicines with possibly high price tags into the national
health system” (Vogler, 2022). It mainly detects early signs of developments through threats and opportunities. Future Healthcare
The future of healthcare is always changing, the model and delivery care, physical facilities, financial compensation, and consumer behaviors. a.
Physical facilities
Physical healthcare facilities in the future will transition to in-home-based appointments such as telehealth. The global COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way of healthcare. More patients are doing telehealth appointments rather than physically coming into the office. Telehealth improves access to care, and convenience, and slows the spread of infections. Insurance companies expanded the coverage of telehealth appointments. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “The percentage of adults who used telemedicine increased with age, from 29.4% among adults aged 18–29 to 43.3% among adults aged 65 and over” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022). Telehealth will continue to shape the future of healthcare. b.
Financial compensation
The shift in healthcare will change how health professionals are financially compensated. They are changing the payment system from fee-for-service to value-based care. Value-based care uses patient satisfaction and outcomes to determine a provider's reimbursement. The change in reimbursement for providers will encourage preventative medicine. c.
Consumer behaviors Patients have more control over their healthcare decisions through patient empowerment and engagement.
This concept improves patient outcomes when the patient and provider work together. It can improve patient satisfaction, quality of care, and well-being. Consumers will become active in their health through patient portals and communication between patients and providers. Key Changes in Model and Delivery Care Every patient has their own personalized medicine from their provider. They have different treatment plans based on their genes, environments, and lifestyles. Personalized medicines are different methods of treating, preventing, and diagnosing diseases or conditions. Preventative medicine will improve a patient's
well-being through personalized medicine. Patient-centric is mainly on the patient's needs and preferences. Providers should respect a patient’s needs and preferences and also add recommendations to their personalized medicine. Patients can request extra lab orders, vaccinations, and imaging. Providing high-quality care will keep patients confident in their care.
