I am looking into the effects of patient neglect on societies faith in the American healthcare system. Faith in the healthcare system is why people vaccinate their kids, take the precautions they should during pandemics, and donate money to find cures and vaccines for diseases that affect the population. Faith in the system has been falling apart for years, due to rising costs and the recent sensationalization of patient neglect has only worsened an already strenuous situation. During Covid-19 people had so much distrust in medicine they were actively
killing themselves by taking horse dewormer and refusing to follow mandated safety precautions. Parents are deciding not to vaccinate their children at an alarming rate, causing diseases that haven’t been seen in decades to resurface.
Three social science resources that I can use for research are, PubMed, Psychology Today, and the National Library of Medicine (NIH). PubMed is a research database that collects peer-reviewed articles about healthcare and healthcare related issues. From this resource, I found the article that had a systemic review on patient neglect in social institutes. It is the first systemic
review on the nature, frequency, and cause of patient neglect (Reader TW, 2013). Psychology Today is a periodical that offers peer reviewed studies and articles about psychology advancements and current events and studies. This source gave me the article Healing Medical Trauma, which gives a detailed account of what can cause medical trauma, how it manifests and causes trust issues, and how difficult it is to treat due to the mistrust of doctors (Steele, 2023). The NIH houses all research papers, empirical studies, statistics, etc., abouts all aspects of medicine, divided into separate databanks by what aspect of medicine it falls under. All of these databanks contain information related to healthcare or psychology, with NIH containing resources from both fields, as psychology is also under the healthcare umbrella. My thought process when choosing these sources was that societal opinion is made up of the collective
experiences and opinions of the individual. When searching for how a society is affected by patient neglect
Social institutes contribute to this problem because, in America, it is common for people to share their experiences and thoughts on social media, letting bad experiences and videos that garner a lot of hate and controversy go viral. Recently, Patient neglect has taken center stage in social media as people are taking a stand against the mistreatment of patients, especially women and people of color. Such as the nurses who were fired for the way they were talking about patients over social media, a classic and very public display of care neglect. Video after video can be found of people sharing their outrage, pointing out how common this treatment is and talking about its contributions to why women do not trust their OBGYN or the labor and delivery
teams. Beliefs and values play a role because of the beliefs medical staff have towards what is and isn’t healthy. Such as the way that doctors brush off women’s symptoms without doing proper testing (procedural neglect) due to incorrect beliefs that all pain and problems stem from having a menstrual cycle. Another example would be a patient’s concerns being brushed off due to their weight; even if they are correct, its can lead patients to feel like the doctor was judging them or treating them as less valuable than others. Doctors are one of the few jobs that people should be allowed to trust implicitly without being judged, otherwise patients won’t go or will lie
about their history. The research question that I have decided on based on the research I have collected is: How does the recent publicity around patient neglect accelerate the deterioration of faith in the American healthcare system? To go about getting this answer, a social scientist might issue a
