An aggregate group is a group of people who are in the same place at the same time but do not necessarily interact or have anything else in common (Crossman, 2020). Cultural, social, and family influences shape attitudes and beliefs of individuals, thus influencing a person’s health literacy. Cultural factors have a hug influence on health. It affects an individual's understanding of health and illness, beliefs about the cause of a disease, approaches to health promotion and disease preventions, and the types of treatment patients prefer. To improve patient care, it is important for healthcare providers to recognize patient’s cultural views on family role, gender role, religion, perception of health and wellness, beliefs about causes and treatments of disease, and views on death and dying. One of the cultural factors that may affect an aggregate group is a language barrier, which can inhibit effective care. Language barriers have a vast impact on the cost and quality of healthcare. Many individuals receiving care in the U.S. have limited English proficiency. Language barriers can lead to miscommunication between patients and providers, increase the risk of medication errors, decrease the quality of care, diminish patient satisfaction, jeopardize patient safety, and negatively impact the relationship between patients and providers (Shamsi, et al., 2022). As a result, individuals with the language barrier will not seek care. Diverse religious and spiritual beliefs not only affect patient experiences but also influence their decisions regarding treatments. Individuals with different religions or spiritual beliefs may address their illness in entirely different ways. For instance, in Jehovah’s Witness religion, blood transfusion, abortion, and artificial insemination are forbidden. Cultural respect has a positive effect on patient care and supports effective health outcomes. Therefore, it is important that healthcare providers develop the cultural competence to care patients from diverse cultures to promote a foundation of trust, better health care and outcomes, and improve treatment adherence.
