Growing Up Poor in America
After watching the film “Growing up Poor in America,” my view of poverty changed.
Before watching, I thought that people who lived off the stimulus checks, and food stamps
provided by the government were choosing to not work out of laziness. After seeing the three
families the film followed to try to make a better life for themselves and talk about how not
being able to work during the pandemic took a toll on their whole families, I understand more
and feel more grief for the poor. Seeing how Shawn cares for his family and his willingness to
help in any way possible affected me deeply. He takes care of his sister, tidies the house, finishes
his schoolwork, and sees his therapist when needed. He is trying to make the best out of his
situation while his mother is out of work due to a liver condition. Regarding poverty being a
determinant of health and quality of life, Kyah stated in the film that she has cavities that hurt her
constantly, but she cannot get to a dentist. Throughout the film, the families are seen going to
food drives, and while most of the items they are supplying families are healthy, fast food and
chips are still one of the readily available options.
In the article “SNAP, Young Children’s Health, and Family Food Security and Health
Access” we learn about the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP which is in
place to encourage low-income families to purchase nutritious foods by supplementing their
grocery budgets (Supplement). This is based on the income of the household, so it is not the
same for every family. In the article, it briefly covers a study on the consumer price index of
specific foods. This program lowers child food insecurity and lowers the chances of childhood
obesity or health issues from the diet. The former name “Food Stamps” was used in the
documentary when the families were asked about how they purchased food. The families were
given money to purchase their food and when they went to the food pantries, they were offered
fruits and meats. Without is program, the families in the documentary would have to budget their
food and buy what is cheapest, typically junk food. This would cause health problems that would
turn into doctor bills that they cannot afford to pay. Overall, SNAP is crucial to the well-being of
these families and allows them to be guaranteed a few meals.
