Reflect on one of those non-conventional modalities that you have
experience with.
I haven’t had any personal experiences with non-conventional modalities, but my
office mate uses complementary health approaches. She uses acupuncture, yoga,
and a herbal (dietary) supplement for her arthritis.
Construct a discussion of that experience utilizing the PDSA model
schemata.
Plan:
The use of acupuncture will be effective in providing comfort and relief of pain
from arthritis. Acupuncture is a unique treatment method based on the practice of
traditional Chinese medicine, in which needles are inserted into certain specific locations
of the exterior body, namely acupoints, to relieve pain or for other therapeutic purposes
(Li et al., 2022). My coworker went to the doctor and was told that to manage arthritis,
she should take NSAIDs daily, but being that she had kidney issues, she wanted to try a
different approach. She looked up different options, and she’s been doing complementary
approaches to promote comfort and relieve pain.
Do:
She attended weekly acupuncture and yoga sessions. She started out taking 1
Turmeric capsule (dietary supplement) daily.
Study:
796 patients in the eligible eleven studies, 402 patients received acupuncture
(including electroacupuncture, traditional acupuncture, and laser acupuncture), and 394
patients received control interventions (including sham acupuncture, medicine, exercise,
and others). The average age of the included studies ranged between 46.5 and 69.1 years.
Six trials reported pain experienced by patients using a visual analog scale (VAS). The
pooled results of these trials showed that the pain score was significantly reduced in
patients with RA who were treated with invasive acupuncture, compared to the control
group (MD = −1.00, 95% CI: −1.96 to −0.05,
P
=0.040). The meta-analysis results
indicated that laser acupuncture had significantly better effects in ameliorating the quality
of life than the control group (MD = −2.32, 95% CI: −4.40 to −0.25,
P
=0.028). Evidence
suggests that acupuncture is beneficial for relieving pain and ameliorating the quality of
life and health index in patients with RA (Li et al., 2022).
Act:
She continues her complementary approach to promote comfort and relieve
pain/inflammation for her arthritis.
