You tell your friend you're taking this course and they respond, "I've never even heard of this? Is it a major? Like, what do they do?" How would respond?
It actually is a major! A human service major helps you learn and understand the different options that are given to you in the human services field. For me I’m hoping to be more mental health focused in the future, but for now, this course will explain the basics of the human service
jobs. The most basic explanation that I can use is one out of our textbook that reads, “Human services has developed in response to the need of individuals or groups for assistance to live better lives.” There are many different ways that human service professionals can work with clients to improve their way of living.
2.
Why is it important to understand the client and the client's environment? Use an example to explain your point.
I think it is very important to understand the client and the clients environment. Just hearing a clients story and not knowing their past of the events that led up to it leads to bias. Simply put, with bias we as professionals cannot do our jobs effectively. One of my friends in this course with
me works at the corrective’s facility in town. Being in the class, my friend knows it is important to
look at everyone as a human and not let bias effect how he treats his clients. He has shared that some of his coworkers are just there to get the hours in and don’t put effort into helping their clients which isn’t helping anybody in that situation. 3.
Give examples of how professional networking, teaming, partnerships, and case management benefited Almeada and Baby Anne.
Professional networking benefited Almeada and Anne when Barbara LaRosa tries to help Almeada to find resources that can help her when moving to her new neighborhood. Like networking is teaming. Teaming is used for delivering good services for the benefit of the client. An example of this would be when Barbara LaRosa contacted Hernando Alvarez. Partnerships are
formed when two or more human service organizations agree to work together toward common
goals. When Hernando scheduled a time to meet with Almeada that was a perk of his department having a partnership with her place of occupation. When multiple corporations are working with the same client, work may get confusing. Case management makes this easier for everybody to understand. Hernando was Almeadas case manager. 4.
What is a generalist worker? Was Barbara LaRosa a generalist worker? Provide three
reasons to support your answer.
A generalist worker would be able to perform everything they’re trained in on people with varying age ranges, ethnicities, religions, etc. I don’t think the book ever specified if LaRosa was a
generalist worker or not, but we can assume that she isn’t considering she’s the case management with a corporation that handle specifically teen mothers. 5.
What did you learn about the field of human services this week?
I’ve learned many things this week but the thing that stuck out most was something I read in the
textbook. In chapter 2 they discuss the different types of specialists and that had never been
something I researched despite being interested. Reading I found out that as of right now, I’m more attracted to either becoming a mental health psychologist or a mental health counselor.
