P. 68 1. How is the format of Intelligence Squared different from the format of the excerpt from Left, Right, Center ? Why might that appeal to a different audience? The format of Intelligence Squared differs from the format of the excerpt from Left, Right, Center by the shared perspectives. Intelligence Squared shared the perspectives of one individual, Tom Baldwin. The other individual on the podcast, Nina Schick, remained unbiased while asking Baldwin questions. Whereas the l eft, Right, Center shared the perspectives of four individuals; one who had a right perspective, one who had a left perspective, and two who had a center perspective. This would appeal to a different audience who simply wants one perspective on the matter at hand, rather than three perspectives. This might allow the audience to better understand certain perspectives on such a matter. 2. What is Nina Schick’s role in the podcast? Nina Schick’s role in the podcast is to remain unbiased. He states what he believes is most said about the relationship between media and politics. He then asks Baldwin his opinion on the matter. From this short dialogue, I can infer that Schick may be the owner of the podcast and that Baldwin is a guest speaker. 3. Explain Tom Baldwin’s point about how newspapers were changed by the emergence of 24-hour news network. Due to the emergence of 24-hour news networks, newspapers no longer had something to write about that would be considered fresh. Therefore, newspapers must take simple actions and turn them into something exciting in the eyes of the public. This is where we get a lot of fake news and political propaganda. 4. How does Baldwin argue that changes in the media have undermined our democracy? Baldwin argues that changes, such as 24-hour news networks, have undermined our democracy by adding to the stress and strain of the system. Stress and strain are added into the system by the constant controversy and drama, that can be easily accessed and shared through social media. With recent technology, the media has been more about exciting events in the eyes of the public rather than the truth of dull events. 5. What do the language choices reveal about each speaker? Do you think their language differs from how they would write the same information in a book or report? Why? The language choices reveal the speaker’s position on the matter. For example, I believe Baldwin is passionate about the subject, whereas Schick remains unbiased. I think that if the same information was shared in a book or report, the language would differ. I believe this because the language could be more intentional. Both speakers would be able to edit and revise the words written to have a formal and convincing tone. Whereas, when recording a podcast, often the words can only be spoken once. Therefore, when recording a podcast, it is essential to think before you speak. Yet often individuals say what is on their mind when asked a question, rather than thinking it through. P. 81 1. What is Sam’s claim, support, and assumption? Is his claim valid? Sam’s claim is that news/stories, such as the one William shared, fosters hate within the community. His support is that the Old Testament, within Christianity, instructs individuals to take part in the same hateful actions. His assumption is that Christians can
part take in the same uncompassionate and hateful acts, just as the Muslims did in this news story. 2. How different is Sam’s reasoning about Christianity from William’s reasoning about Islam? Sam’s reasoning about Christianity is not very different than William’s reasoning about Islam. Both sides of reasoning can be viewed as biased, due to only representing a percentage of the population rather than a whole. Even though Sam’s reasoning looks to the Old Testament rather than certain individuals, many Christians today do not follow the commandments in that section but look to the New Testament for guidance. 3. Is there any validity to Sam’s comparing the actions of Taliban members to the teachings of the Old Testament? I do not believe that there is any validity to Sam comparing the actions of Taliban members to the teachings of the Old Testament. The actions of Taliban members were shared through a current news source. Whereas, the Old Testament has been present for thousands of years. Most of the commandments within the Old Testament are no longer relevant to us in today’s society.
