Option 1: Ethics in Action
Complete the ethics training and do the following:
Looking at one of the articles you used in your literature review, address the following:
Misinformation lingers in memory: Failure of three pro-vaccination strategies was the article I used for this discussion.
Which areas of ethics might have been of concern?
The area in this study that might have been a focus of ethical concern is minimizing harm for others. The study showed participants facts about immunizations and myths (Pluviano, Watt, & Sergio, 2017). The researchers found that when they presented factual information next to myths it increased the level of misinformation being encoded. They also found that when they showed pictures of the consequences of not vaccinating children to the participants it increased the misperception that vaccinations led to sick children. Since this study can increase negative views about immunizations it could led to psychological harm for the participants. The biggest role of researchers is to keep their participants from physical or psychological harm (Salkind, 2017).
Describe what they did to be ethical researchers.
The researchers gathered informed consent from all the participants before the start of the study.
Explain what risks their participants might have faced. The biggest risk the participants faced was the creation of false memories due to the increased encoding of the myths into memory. This could lead to the participants changing their beliefs against vaccinating their children and could led to the children getting a disease like measles, mumps or rubella. o
Your study:
Which areas of ethics might be of concern for your study? The area of ethics that might be of concern for my study is also minimizing risks for participants.
Describe what risks are there to your participants.
One measure used is to have participants listen to music while reading myths versus fact information about vaccinating children and there could be a danger of the music being too loud or the lyrics having an adverse effect on the participants psychological wellbeing.
Explain what you will need to do to be ethically compliant.
I will need to ensure that the music is listened to at a safe level by using an app that doesn’t allow the sound to be to loud. Pluviano, S., Watt, C., & Sergio, D. S. (2017). Misinformation lingers in memory: Failure of
