This post defends Tyson and Goldsmith’s (2022) fourth response to science is that a “large section of the public accepts the scientific approach to nature while maintaining a belief in supernatural entities existing beyond our complete understanding that rule the cosmos” (p. 20) This group includes those who hold religious beliefs such as Christians. They believe God created the universe from the creation account in Genesis 1. Tyson clarifies that “more conventional religions…reconcile the two by mentally separating the domains in which the natural and the supernatural operate” (Tyson & Goldsmith, 2022, p. 20). The natural and supernatural are separate because you can see the physical world; one cannot see the supernatural, although evidence of the physical world God created is visible. Colossians 1:16 (2011) states, “For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible” ( New International Version ). Since God created all things, He has sovereign rule over the universe ( New International Version , 2011, Jer. 32:17). Even though God created the natural and the supernatural, “Science studies the natural world” such as the “physical universe…but that means you can’t really study the supernatural” (Pevarnik 00:14:28-45). The scientific process studies the natural world, not the supernatural. Pevarnik’s statement agrees with methodological naturalism: “[T]he scientific practice of limiting the explanation of natural phenomena to only natural mechanisms, [which] is a wise and powerful means of investigating the created order” (Applegate, 2013, p. 37). Christianity can answer philosophical questions outside of science’s limits. van Woudenberg (2013) states, “[W]hereas science is unable to answer ultimate questions, the sources of Christian faith may provide warranted answers to such questions” (p. 34). People can submit to the scientific process of studying nature while believing in a ruling supernatural being. References Applegate, K. (2013).
