Identify and explain in detail two scenarios from your life in which you had to break a promise and tell a lie, respectively.
2.
Apply each ethical theory to your two examples.
a.
Explain what each ethical theory will say is the morally right thing you are obligated to do (i.e., keep a promise or break a promise, lie, or tell the truth).
b.

3.
Lastly, answer the three short answer questions at the bottom of this template. Be sure to cite pertinent course materials in APA format to support your knowledge of these theories.

Personal example 1
Breaking a Promise
Provide Necessary
details
Virtue Ethics
Kantian Ethics
Utilitarian Ethics
I promised my sister
that I would start
saving my money
instead of
spending it on purses and shoes so I could help her more with rent and things around
the house, and I have
broken that promise a
few times. Virtue ethics is
something we use to
describe personality
traits. I wanted new
purses and shoes and
thought I needed
them, so I did what was
in my interest rather
than the overall good.
They say you should
keep a promise, as it
speaks to your
character. I needed shoes and
purses for specific
events, and even
though my sister
understood where I
was coming from, I
decided to do what
was best for me. They
don’t believe in false
promises; don’t make
one if you don’t intend
to keep it, as you must
do the right thing. I work hard for the
money I have earned
and want to spend it
on what I want. When I
finish school and can
work more, I can help
pay the bills. They
believe that breaking a
promise will result in a
better outcome then
you should break it. Personal example 2
Telling a Lie
Provide Necessary
details
Virtue Ethics
Kantian Ethics
Utilitarian Ethics
I overslept for two hours and was late for work. I told my manager that my alarm did not go off, but it did. I just turned it off several times before I got out of bed. I was afraid I would get in trouble and write up for oversleeping. So I said my alarm didn’t go off, resulting in me not waking up in time.
They say lying does not show good characteristics, and I should’ve said I just overslept. They believe in telling
the truth because if I
were the manager, I
would want my
employees to feel they
could talk to me and
tell me the truth. I made it to work and only
missed two hours. Which is
less than the amount of time
we are allowed to forget. I
was afraid my manager
would tell me to stay home
and that I would miss my 8
hours of pay.
Short Answer Questions
1.
Which theory or theories (out of those listed above) could you use to justify breaking a promise and telling a lie? I would use the utilitarian theory. They believe you should do whatever the best outcome, no matter the consequence. They want to promote a person's happiness above all. " Utilitarianism is a theory of morality that advocates actions that foster happiness or pleasure and oppose actions that cause unhappiness or harm" ( Tardi, 2023).
2.
How might you respond if someone broke a promise to you or told a lie? I would be hurt and feel betrayed, but I would also want to know their reasoning and why they felt it was necessary to break the promise or lie.
3.
How might you respond in a supportive manner that recognizes the feelings of others yet still holds them accountable for their moral decisions? I would explain that it has made me lose trust
in them and that, no matter the outcome, I would like to know the truth even if I don't like it. Reference:
