Module 1 DB
Introduce yourself (your journey in the field of education and your personal life. Through the lens of 'who you are' what is a disability?
Hi everyone, my name is Peter Ruotolo and I am from Staten Island. I was a paraprofessional for
6 years but left the DOE after I got my degree in finance. I started my masters 6 months after I left because I missed working in a school but I did not want to go back to being a para. What is inclusive education?
According to Bryant “inclusive education is when students with disabilities have access to the same curriculum and materials that general education students have. Inclusive education can be implemented through the universal design for learning” (Bryant, 2016). Inclusion education is an approach to teaching and learning that aims to embrace and accommodate the diverse needs, abilities, and backgrounds of all students within the same learning environment. The fundamental principle of inclusive education is the belief that every student, regardless of their abilities or disabilities, should have the opportunity to learn together in an inclusive and supportive setting.
What would be an essential component of your school's inclusion philosophy/position?
Bryant's text says educators need to have open and consistent communication with their guardians, doctors, therapists, etc. Included in a school's inclusion philosophy are materials and resources that students can easily access, such as assistive technology, differentiated instruction, related school services (SETS, speech, occupational and physical therapy) frequent monitoring and assessments of progress, family involvement, etc. It is also important for schools to establish a clear and concise agreement within their organization regarding accepting all students, teachers, abilities, etc., as part of their inclusion philosophy/position. In addition to teaching according to their students, teachers should also teach their students how to help others around them. All students can achieve their academic goals if a healthy learning environment is created. References:
