Project Two Milestone
Research Study:
The Essential Moral Self
1.
Select a peer-reviewed journal article and describe its relevance
to you personally or professionally in about 50 to 75 words.
The peer-reviewed journal article that I chose was The Essential Moral Self. This article has relevance to me both personally and professionally. I relate personally because of how often I think about my own mental transformation, and what exactly that entails. It is important to me to feel that I am morally sound. This article also speaks to me professionally because I want to be a therapist and looking into behavior changes or where they come from is important in that field.
2.
Describe the purpose
of the peer-reviewed journal article in about 25 to 50 words.
The purpose of this journal article is to compare studies about moral traits and mental transformations. In doing so, they want to show that the way someone thinks mentally will affect their social behavior especially in regard to the way we behave morally. They also want to see what the most important factor is that makes up our personal identity.
3.
Identify the major
methodological design
of the peer-reviewed journal article in about 25 to 50 words.
The major methodological design used in this peer-reviewed journal is a Quantitative design method. This is due to the fact that they used interval measurements when conducting these studies. They asked the participants to measure how much they agreed or disagreed on a number scale to the situation at hand.
4.
Identify strengths and weaknesses
of the specific measurement used to operationalize one of the key variables in about 50 to 100 words.
The strength to using quantitative measurement for this study is that it allowed the researchers to see how participants felt about a person's identity based on a scenario they were given. This made it so that they could see if the question of morality is linked to someone's personal identity. The weakness of using this measurement is that this study is also based on opinions from a questionnaire. Culture, age, race or gender may come into play and that could change the answer depending on where and to whom the
questions are being asked. We can also question the external validity of this research and how the participants were chosen.

5.
Identify the key variables
and how they were operationalized in the study (i.e., what measures were used) in about 100 to 150 words.
The key variables that were used in the study were conceptual variables in order to test the studies hypothesis that morality is the main factor of personal identity. The method used for this variable was through several questionnaires. These were measured variables since they were asked to rate questions on numerical scale. These surveys were done online and had several scenarios and situations like if someone suffered a brain injury, if someone took drugs, reincarnation, and several others all tying in together. The participants were to answer questions on a scaled level that would factor in morality, personality traits, desires and memories. The questions with the corresponding category would then be ranked and viewed as to which was deemed the most important in what made up someone's personal identity.
