PACO 501: Discussion Thread 1: Constellation of Diseases
The question asked by George and his parents "Why did God allow these diseases to happen to me?" lets me know that George and his parents have yet to come to a full understanding and a total dependency on the absolute inerrancy of God's words (Erickson, 2015).
I would primarily explain to the parents or if asked to counsel George that the origin of all diseases comes from sin. When Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden, it was a result of the sin of disobedience toward God as accounted in Genesis 3. Because of the fall of man, we are all born into an Adamic nature of sin sickness, and none are exempt from diseases, pain, and suffering. Using Lambert's approach through scripture, that is "The doctrine of the sufficiency of Scripture" (Lambert, 2016. p. 37), illustrates Job's life. First identifying how the historical book of Job recognizes Job as a man who was blameless, upright, feared God, and turned from evil" (Job 1:1. KJV). However, Job, who had a family and substances greater than any other man in the East, lost it all and was touched with a serious illness. God allowed Satan to touch Job but did not allow him to take his life (Job 2:6). After which, all that Job lost was restored by God and Job had a deeper understanding of the God he served. Even Christ, the Son of God, who healed others of sin and its diseases, would also suffer in the flesh because of the sins of the world. Looking at the lives of both Job and Jesus Christ, we can see God's sovereign will in action and the control God holds over all circumstances. In both cases, God used all things for good (Romans 8:28). Job's knowledge of who God is deepened, and the suffering and death Christ experienced on our behalf paid the price for the sins of the world. There are many accounts throughout Scripture that show the great suffering of individuals, but how God used their suffering to show His power working in them and through them. I would also like to remind
Goerge and his parents that God is not a God who does not care or a God who is not involved in
their lives, for it is written that we are to bring all our cares to God because He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7). References
