Writing Assignment 1: Discussing Your Stance Toward Vegetarianism Word Count: 715 Vegetarianism Is the Way to Inner Peace Having a chance to live long on this global by being vegetarian! Vegetarians are people who do not eat all kinds of meat and their meals are usually vegetables. Thereout, some Buddhists can drink meal or eat industrial chicken eggs during their meals. Why do they want to be vegetarian? Some people want to be vegetarian because they want to lose weight, have smooth skin and good health. In addition, some Buddhists believe that being vegetarian will help them repent and purify. However, some people who eat meat, believe that being vegetarian not good for health because it will not provide enough protein and energy from meat. In my opinion, vegetarianism is a good thing to practice patience and control emotions. First of all, vegetarianism helps people to have a good health and against cancer with meat, beef, pork and lamb, according to Castleman (1995). Nowadays, the environmental pollution is increasing strongly, and animals are affected by that thing. When people raise animals for meat, they are also affected by pollution from that animals. Nevertheless, vegetables are less polluted than meat, and they can help people to remove toxins from meat because the advance science and technology has created a technique for growing vegetables in “greenhouse” Therefore, vegetarians will avoid higher cancer than meat-eaters. On the other hand, some people claimed that vegetarian is not good for health. Everyone knows that meat provide protein, energy and vitamin B12 for blood. Therefore, if we eat vegetarian long term, we will be lack of nutrients in meals, according to Cerrato (1991). In fact, vegetarians do not have enough energy to do heavy things like meat-eaters. For example, people who eat meat for weight training are more effective than vegetarians because meat provide

proteins for muscles and energy for body. Moreover, if meat-eaters and vegetarian to carry a heavy log, it is like an elephant and an ant to carry that log. Secondly, many vegetarians follow their religion because religion has an important influence on them. They treat animals as human lives and do not accept follower to eat meat. Depending on each religion, there are different ways of vegetarians. According to Preaching Christian Vegetarianism, they claimed that “the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has argued that Catholic priests, South Baptists, and even poultry producers who call themselves devout Christians should be vegetarians because Jesus himself was a vegetarian” (1998). Likely, Buddhism keep a permanent vegetarian diet, but they are not obliged, and they follow voluntary. Nonetheless, some Christians support to kill animals and eat meat, “killing and eating animals is not only not forbidden in the Bible, but for some important occasions, it is advocated” (Witherell, 1994). Therefore, people who believe in their religion and do bad things, will affect to their religion, and the power of that religion will be lost. Lastly, Robinson supposed “raising animals to eat is surprisingly wasteful of land and food” (1995). In fact, when people want to eat meat, they use the big land to raise animal. Moreover, not only do you waste the land, but you also waste a lot of money and water to feed them. For example, one pound of meat takes almost 2,500 gallons of water, according to “Why Be a Vegetarian?” (1999). We can see that one people to be vegetarian, they can almost save 2,500 gallons of water. However, some people still decide to eat meat without compassion for animals, and they are called “a cruel murderer”. To put it all in a nutshell, “If I become a vegetarian, I will indirectly improve life for others” (the author). In other words, we can save money and water, protect environment and give the opportunity to survive for animals. Furthermore, we can improve our health, lose weight and
