In Chapter 2 of your readings by Creswell & Poth this week, you were presented with 4 philosophical assumptions researchers bring into research. Define each of the 4 assumptions and then explain how they can be seen in your research area of interest. Your main post should include the following: A brief description of your research interest area. In sports there are many different things that can cause an athlete to change their performance. In college, college athletes have their studies and athletic accomplishments that they must perform at their best. I am curious to determine if and how gender differences exist in the ways that virtual reality (V.R.) technology influences college athlete’s anxiety and performance. I am aiming to find out how college athletes perform under pressured conditions and does gender play a role. The research study will recognize literature by analyzing the pros and cons of using V.R. technology to improve athletic performance, regarding a college athlete’s gender. A description of the 4 philosophical assumptions. A discussion of how thee 4 philosophical assumptions can be seen in your research area. Ontological Assumption: Ontology refers to the nature of reality and what can be considered as existing. It deals with questions about the nature of being, existence, and the relationship between individuals and the world they inhabit. In the context of qualitative research, ontological assumptions are the beliefs about the nature of the social world and the phenomena being studied (Creswell & Poth, 2018). In the research area of college athletes, the ontological assumption may involve viewing college athletes as social actors with their own subjective experiences, emotions, and agency. It recognizes that college athletes are not just passive objects to be studied, but rather individuals who actively engage with their environment, make choices, and have their own perspectives (Nichol et al., 2021). Epistemological Assumption: Epistemology concerns knowledge and how it can be acquired or known. It deals with questions about the nature of knowledge, truth, and the ways in which knowledge can be justified or validated. In qualitative research, epistemological assumptions refer to the beliefs about how knowledge is constructed and understood (Creswell & Poth, 2018). In the context of college athletes, the epistemological assumption may involve recognizing that knowledge about their experiences and realities is subjective and socially constructed. It acknowledges that understanding college athletes requires an exploration of their lived experiences, perspectives, and meanings attached to their athletic endeavors. This assumption encourages researchers to engage in in-depth interviews, observations, and other qualitative methods to capture the nuanced and context-dependent nature of athletes' knowledge. Collegiate student-athletes more open to experience may share knowledge with peers in exchange for knowledge from peers to expand perspectives (Ni & Fen, 2023).
Axiological Assumption: Axiology deals with values and ethics. It involves questions about the role of researchers' values, biases, and the ethical considerations in the research process. Axiological assumptions in qualitative research refer to the beliefs about the role of values and ethics in conducting research and the acknowledgment of the potential influence of the researchers' values on the research process and findings (Creswell & Poth, 2018). In the study of college athletes, the axiological assumption might involve recognizing and acknowledging the potential influence of the researchers' values and beliefs on the research process. It requires researchers to be transparent about their own biases, values, and potential conflicts of interest. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of ethical considerations in research, such as informed consent, participant confidentiality, and the well-being of the college athletes involved in the study (Batsunov, 2021). Methodological Assumption: Methodology refers to the systematic and theoretical analysis of research methods. Methodological assumptions in qualitative research relate to the beliefs about the appropriate methods and techniques for studying the phenomena of interest. It involves decisions about data collection, analysis, and interpretation. Methodology is the strategy or overall plan to acquire knowledge, and methods are the actual techniques used to gather and analyze data (Brown & Dueñas, 2019). In the research area of college athletes, the methodological assumption might involve employing qualitative research methods that allow for in-depth exploration and understanding of the experiences and perspectives of the athletes. This could include methods such as interviews, observations, focus groups, and document analysis. The focus is on capturing rich, contextualized data that can provide insights into the complex social and personal dynamics involved in being a college athlete. The analysis would involve interpreting and meaning making from the collected data, often utilizing techniques like thematic analysis or grounded theory. Overall, the interrelation of research to form work with these assumptions informs us that axiology asks the question of what do we value? Ontology asks the question of what is out there to know? Epistemology asks the question of what and how can we know about it? Methodology asks the question of how can we go about acquiring that knowledge? (Brown & Dueñas, 2019). The four philosophical assumptions - ontological, epistemological, axiological, and methodological - shape the way qualitative research is approached in the study of college athletes. They guide researchers in understanding the nature of reality, constructing knowledge, considering values and ethics, and selecting appropriate methods for data collection and analysis (Creswell & Poth, 2018).
