Key Terms  Class struggle: classes want different things and have different interests. Employers want to exploit workers and make more money, workers want more rights and benefits such as dental health job security mobility within the job and all of the things that make “good jobs.”  Surplus Value: profit made by the bourgeoisie. “The amount raised through the sale of the product minus the cost of material, plant, and labor power.”  Ideology: as Marx saw it, a system of conscious and unconscious beliefs and ideas that govern peoples lives. Essentially your value system)  Meritocracy: Meritocracy is a social system founded on that belief that rulers should be chosen for their abilities rather than for their wealth or family tree.  False Consciousness: Proletariat have been conditioned to accept the beliefs, values, and norms of the ruling class, even though these ideologies are disadvantageous to their interests.  Petite bourgeoisie : small capitalists, may own the means of production but not employ the workers.  Lumpenproletariat : lowest layer of the working class.  Specialist: have marketable skills and training that they sell to the capitalist through their labour. (doctrs, lawyers, and professors)  Class Consciousness: o a term used in Marxist theory to refer to people’s beliefs regarding their social class and class interests. Distinguished between “class in itself” & “Class for itself.” o it is an awareness of what is in the best interests of one’s class and is an important precondition for organizing into a “class for itself” to advocate for class interests.  Union: o Organizations of employees who work together to negotiate for what is in their best interests, including: pay, benefits, hiring and firing practices, and working conditions. o Unions bargain with the employer on behalf of workers.  Trade Union Density: o the percentage of wage earners in a population who are part of a union. o Trade union density is on the decline.  Scab Workers: o Temporary or permanent replacements for workers who are on strike.

 Agency: Free will  Intergenerational mobility: Occurs between generations, from parent to child.  Intragenerational mobility: Occurs within a single generation.  “ Class in itself”: a category of people with a common relation to the means of production (such as the worker or proletariat)  “ Class for itself”: a group organized in the pursuit of their own interests. (example would be unionized workers pushing for better conditions.)  Power: the chance of a man to realize his own will even against the resistance of others who are participating in the same action.  Three primary bases of power in society – Max Weber: o Economic class (Income, wealth) o Social status (prestige, honour) o Party (political power)  Poverty: o A state in which resources (material or cultural) are lacking  Relative Poverty: o Poverty relative from one individual in comparison to another.  Absolute Poverty: o The life threatening deprivation of an individual.  Cycle of poverty  LICO’s  Ideologies 
