Key Terms Class struggle: classes want different things and have different interests. Distinguished between “class in itself” & “Class for itself.” o it is an awareness of what is in the best interests of one’s class and is an important precondition for organizing into a “class for itself” to advocate for class interests. Union: o Organizations of employees who work together to negotiate for what is in their best interests, including: pay, benefits, hiring and firing practices, and working conditions. o Unions bargain with the employer on behalf of workers. Trade Union Density: o the percentage of wage earners in a population who are part of a union. o Trade union density is on the decline. Scab Workers: o Temporary or permanent replacements for workers who are on strike.
Agency: Free will Intergenerational mobility: Occurs between generations, from parent to child. Intragenerational mobility: Occurs within a single generation. Class in itself”: a category of people with a common relation to the means of production (such as the worker or proletariat) Class for itself”: a group organized in the pursuit of their own interests. (example would be unionized workers pushing for better conditions.) Power: the chance of a man to realize his own will even against the resistance of others who are participating in the same action. Three primary bases of power in society – Max Weber: o Economic class (Income, wealth) o Social status (prestige, honour) o Party (political power) Poverty: o A state in which resources (material or cultural) are lacking Relative Poverty: o Poverty relative from one individual in comparison to another.
