Ethnic Diversity and Cultural Standards Four situations you can judge: o Someone is at direct risk of harm o Ethnic cultural standards conflict with professional standards (ex. Jehovah’s witness nurse) o The greater community’s values are jeopardized (might harm one but not everybody) o The ethnic community customs are annoying but not problematic for the greater community Handling Moral Distress Identify situations that lead to distress Communicate concern and examine ways to address the stressor Seek support from colleagues Definitions, Theories, and Principles Ethics: values, beliefs, moral norms Values Consequentialism Utilitarianism: form of practice that doing the greatest good for the greatest amount of people is important Deontology Respect for autonomy: the right to make decisions for oneself o Including and educating them about their care o Leaving AMA Nonmaleficence Beneficence Distributive justice: fair distribution of benefits and burdens in society based on societal needs and the contribution of its members o Sharing of burdens: financially supporting the elders (social security) Egalitarianism Libertarianism
