Quantitative Evidence Project Purpose: Mathematical reasoning and various statistical tools are often used to organize quantitative and qualitative data to form an argument to support or contradict a given position on an issue. In this age of information, it is imperative to understand the power of data. The purpose of this assignment is to present a persuasive case in support of or in opposition to a social issue using appropriate quantitative evidence. Assignment Goal: Identify and present quantitative evidence to support or oppose a given social issue in a logically sound, persuasive argument. Instructions: For this project, you will collaborate with other students. Together, you will choose a topic from a list of topics provided by your instructor. Within the group, members will take opposite sides of this argument. Decide together which side of the argument each of you will take. With the use of data, quantitative evidence, statistics, and logical reasoning, you will try to persuade the reader to support your side. You will need to find at least three different publications to support your side of the argument. Each side of the argument will submit the following response: Project Answer the following: 1. Which topic did your group choose? An argument presents a case for a particular position. State the position you are taking on the topic and provide an explanation of why this is important to consider. Identify credible sources of information you will review and explain how you know this evidence is credible. 2. Describe the quantitative evidence/data you have found to support your position. This evidence should be facts, not opinions. Include any summary statistics like mean, median, proportions, etc. Provide any charts or graphs that would help to persuade your audience. Summarize the information conveyed by the quantitative evidence/data and charts/graphs. How does this information support your position? 3. Think about your initial belief related to this topic. Is the position you supported in this project the one you would have personally taken on this topic? Using the facts from #2 and #3, explain how your quantitative evidence deepened your personal belief or changed your personal belief. 4. What is the most compelling quantitative evidence each side used to make their argument? (Alternatively: What is the most compelling evidence that could have been presented to support the opposite position?) How do you know the evidence is credible? Describe the point of view or potential bias of each source. What quantitative evidence could be used to counter the compelling evidence provided by each side? Explain.
Instructions for Submission: Enter your responses after the question. You may change the color of the font of your responses. Writing Mechanics: Correct spelling, grammar, and sentence structure.
