Engagement Activity 3 1. An example of how I could think of possibilities as an adolescent was when I was choosing courses for grade 11 and I had to think about whether I wanted to continue taking the sciences or not. In this scenario, I decided to continue taking them for the rest of my high school journey because I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do in the future and I wanted to have multiple possibilities of what career I could go into even though a lot of the older people I talked to advised me not to take sciences if I wasn’t good at it because it would be a waste of my time and energy but I couldn’t come to terms with turning opportunities down altogether. 2. One time I thought about abstract things was when I came to the age where I had to think for myself whether I believed in God or not this was a decision I had to make for myself outside of what my parents had always taught me growing up. When I decided to believe in a higher being I was thinking about an abstract concept because it is a known fact that we can’t physically see, touch or hear God but it was more about how he affected us emotionally and I found it within myself that believing in this higher power helped me have faith when I was running low on faith in myself. 3. The first time I thought about metacognition was when I had to study for my very first exam in high school and I had to think about what works best for me when memorizing the content this made me consider what types of study methods helped me remember the content. This was the first time that I recall thinking about thinking and how I prefer to remember things and I found that attaching the lesson to a memory or personal experience helped if it was possible to do so. 4. One time I thought about multidimensional thinking was when I got into an argument with one of my friends and realized that we were both right in our way and had to think about how my acts had affected her and vice versa. This was very difficult at first because at that young age, I just wanted her to understand that she was in the wrong but I had to take a few steps back and analyze how we could have both been right in our own way and we should both apologize and move on for the benefit of our friendship. 5. An experience I had about thinking relatively and not absolutely was when I had failed an exam right after a big family change and I had to stop myself from mopping in my misery because I had failed an exam for the first time in my life and I had to consider that this big family change affected me and therefore I wasn’t focused enough on the content, ultimately causing me to fail the exam.
