Ethics and the Police Objective: Answer the following questions in well-developed sentences or short paragraphs. Question 1: Explain whether the actions of Officer Langdon support perceptions of the law enforcement as crime fighters/warriors or public servants/guardians. I think he took the role of public servant. He was trying to do the best thing for all parties. He was thinking of the consequences of his actions. He wanted to make sure whatever he decided to do to Peggy was not going to hurt those around him. Noble, if you ask me. Question 2: Summarize the codes of ethics that Officer Langdon encountered in the scenario. He came across the ethics summarized as: Constantly mindful of the community and others. Behaving in a manner that doesn’t discredit or dishonor his badge and his agency. He enforced the law with courtesy and appropriately. Was not corrupted and is responsible for his professional performance. Followed the guidelines and dedicated himself before God to his profession. Question 3: Compare and contrast the values of police with the code of ethics. The police values are basic and wide berthed guidelines for the Agency to follow. The code of ethics is what the individual is supposed to follow and adhere to. They both go hand-in- hand. Its one of those “you can’t have one without the other”. Question 4: Classify the type of discretion used by Officer Langdon in the scenario. Explain your response. He chose the Caretaker Discretion role. He factored in his co-workers and the offenders reactions to his action. He wanted to do what was best for his fellow officers.
