1) Some of the major differences between the Confucian understanding of the Way and the Daoist understanding of the Way are that the Confucian understanding of the way is that it is more human centered versus the Daoist understanding of the way being less than understandable in words as it can not be express properly in words (7-3). The way in Daoism is more of an entity than it is a school of thought. 2) The Confucian view of culture and civilization is that culture is what distinguished humans from other animals (6-3). Confucius believed that once civilization returned to the proper path, that cultural progress would resume. 3) Li, roughly mean ritualized conduct, was important to Confucius because he believed that li was an embodiment of social and moral values (6-9). The rites of ancestral veneration for example were believed to help socialize a child and bind the family together encouraging an attitude of reverence. 4) The Daoist view of the natural world is in stark contrast to that of Confucianism. The Daoist belief is that the way gave way to humans and that humans in their normal conditions just drift along, going with the flow. The natural way to live according to Daoist belief is to let nature take its course and to avoid altering one’s surroundings and situations (7-3). This way uses basic animal instinct as the driving force for human life. 5) The role of emptiness in Daoism is that one should have not thought or desire, acting only on instinct (7-3). The emptiness of one’s head symbolizes wholeness and unity.
