The Age of Genomes: Tales from the Front Lines of Genetic Medicine
by Steven
Monroe Lipkin, I agree with the idea that more genetic testing will improve public health and
long-term treatment. The progression of genetic testing connects to the course theme of tradition.
(162) Genetic testing is a rapidly evolving field that has the potential to revolutionize healthcare
by identifying genetic mutations or variations that may increase a person's risk of developing
certain diseases or conditions over time. (162) This technology is a significant development in
the tradition of medicine, as it allows for health professionals to pass down more treatment
strategies, improving long-term health outcomes.
Although, in the past, refined health care examined the human body related to
environmental factors. Now, the changing medical field recognizes genetics, as well.
Improvements, such as this expansion, is a longstanding tradition in the medical field. As such, it
is crucial to take a general approach to healthcare that considers both genetic and environmental
factors. While genetic testing has the potential to improve public health outcomes, it is important
to approach this technology with care to people and to consider the potential implications, both
positive and negative, of increased genetic testing on the tradition of medicine. Genetic testing is
an extension of the longstanding tradition of medicine, reflecting the evolution and adaptation of
the field while passing knowledge and expertise down from the past. It's important to ensure that
it is used responsibly and for the benefit of patients.

I disagree with Lipkin's idea of genetic enhancements to get rid of certain genetics so
particular individuals have better genes. This raises related issues connecting to the course theme
of transparency. The idea of genetic enhancement, as discussed in the book on page 167, raises
several ethical and practical concerns. Ethically, genetic enhancement could lead to the creation
of a society that values individuals based on their genetic traits rather than their intrinsic value as
human beings. This could lead to social inequality and discrimination against individuals with
genetic traits that could increase the likelihood of illness or disability. In addition, genetic
enhancement could be used for non-medical purposes, such as enhancing physical or cognitive
abilities. (167) These modifications could further exacerbate social inequalities and create an
unfair advantage for those who cannot afford genetic enhancements. From a practical standpoint,
genetic enhancement carries significant risks. The long-term effects of modifying genetic traits
are not yet fully understood. (170) Genetic enhancement might cause unforeseen side effects and
unintended consequences. Genetic enhancements could also lead to a loss of genetic diversity,
which could have negative consequences for the survival of certain populations. Additionally,
genetic enhancement could reduce the natural selection process. (233) This could diminish the
necessary genetic viability for the evolution and adaptation of the human species. (152)
Transparency in the use of genetic enhancement is crucial to ensure that individuals understand
the potential risks, benefits, and social consequences. Without transparency, individuals may not
have access to information about the effects of genetic enhancements.
When I am working as a computer scientist, working in the field of genomics, at Pfizer,
the concepts and ideas presented in the book on machine learning and artificial intelligence for
genomic analysis are of great importance to me. (111-116) Machine learning could help me
identify patterns and associations in genomic data that may be difficult or impossible to discover
