Dear Evelyn,
I want you to think about and reflect on what your ethical approaches and principles are.
Ethics refers to theories about moral rules and helps justify the rules you live by daily and
determines your character. It also determines how you treat people. Ethical principles also largely
depend on values and morals. Perhaps these have changed over time and may even change later
on after reading this letter.
Morals have much to do with ethics. Morals refer to what you believe to be right or
wrong, or good and evil. When considering a moral argument, there is no right or wrong, there is
only applying the principles you believe are right, justifying it, and determining whether or not
they are being applied in a correct manner (Rachel & Rachel, 2019).
Just because you can do
something, should you? This is where your moral character comes into play. Values are the
things that make up your moral code, and what your value while making your decisions. Many
factors can affect your moral code, including your experiences, upbringing, and personal beliefs.
One institution of socialization that has had a major impact on your moral code and ethics
is your family. Your father is an incredible man with an amazing work ethic and has always
maintained his integrity. He believes to do the right thing at all times, even when no one is
watching. He has been extremely true to his morals. Your mother has not had the same ethical
principles but always reinforced what your father has shown. They have tried to make you aware
of what is good and evil, what behaviors are acceptable, and which are not at home.
Another institution of socialization has been school. In school, you were also learning
about what behaviors are good and which are not. You also learned to ask hard questions,
including questioning your own morals, values, and ethical principles. You will never forget the
