First, introduce yourself to the class. Include your major and anything you would like to share about
yourself. Then address the prompt below.
Using the module resources provided as a jumping-off point, please describe your own philosophy
regarding the nature of the mind-body relationship. You may refer to the following questions to help you
structure your response:
Do you think there is a relationship between the mind and the body? Why or why not? If so,
what is the nature of this relationship?
Describe the basis for your philosophy—do you have experiences that have led you to
conceptualize the mind-body relationship in this way?
Can you provide any real-life examples of an interaction between mind and body?
Given your philosophy, what is the appropriate role of traditional Western biomedical versus
alternative or holistic approaches to treatment model? Do you have any real-life experience with
such approaches? Please explain.
Hello Class,
My name is Paige, and I am currently majoring in Health Information Management. I live
in Pennsylvania with my husband and our dog Cash. I believe that there is a relationship between
the mind and body, when you are not feeling one hundred percent like yourself, you may start to
notice physical symptoms such as heart palpitations, and sweaty palms. The nature of this
relationship that occurs between the mind and the body is like our fight or flight stress response,
it is our human instinct to react to things that are happening to us and around us. Some may feel
things more than others, with just their instinct for example, those who struggle with PTSD feel a
deeper sense of panic and stress when faced with an emotional trigger.
My basis for this
philosophy comes from personal experience I have with the connection between the mind, and
body. I was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder about six years ago, prior to the
diagnosis, I spent many sleepless nights feeling as though my mind was attacking my body. The
constant internal battle that I fought with my mind began to slowly eat away at me, due to lack of
sleep and appetite I lost weight in ways I could not afford to. I sought out treatment from a
therapist, and was soon diagnosis over the years, I have learned many coping skills and
techniques to assist myself when I do feel triggered. Treatment can come in many different forms
some may try a holistic approach instead of the traditional western biomedical approach.
Personally, I have tried meditation, and yoga, and was unable to connect with those methods, but
I do have friends that have used meditation as their number one form of treatment. It is important
to note that everyone’s journey is different.
