Teaching Philosophy for ELLs

I believe that all students deserve a fair and equitable opportunity for learning. There are
several different factors in which create an outstanding educator which include being responsive,
being challenging, being empowering, being equitable, and being engaging.
Based upon those
characteristics, I believe that all students should have a fair accessibility of these elements for
student success. Student success can be compiled of many different factors; however, I believe
that the main factors should be based upon mental wellness and academic success respectively.
English language learners have those very same needs and learning implications that non-
ELLS have. In fact, there are instances where they need more. According to (Margarita Calderón,
Robert Slavin and Marta Sánchez, 103) English Language Learners typically only receive 30
minutes of ESL instruction with other subject teachers left unprepared to fill those gaps in. My
philosophy is simple—to be the grout of those gaps. Aside from this course, I plan on making it a
conscious effort to ensure my ELL students will have all the support I can possibly provide for
them, hopefully with additional resources and community.
When assessments are underway in my classroom, it is especially important that there is
more to simply just assessing content. (Durán, 293) There are many aspects to consider regarding
validity and inclusion, especially with ELLs. As part of my philosophy, I believe that each student
has his or her own tailored needs and outcomes that should be taken into consideration. While a
hot take on a touchy subject, I believe that assessments should have wiggle room, also tailored for
the students.
Students should have some say in what and how they learn. I feel this will even create a
love of learning and a lifelong positive relationship with education.
As a future secondary
English teacher, I feel this is a huge topic that isn’t talked about or considered enough—especially
those who are ELL students. This could consist of the student choosing a piece of literature based
