Reading Response 5: Chapter 5: Skill five: Critical Thinking
Critical thinking is beneficial for anyone. It allows us to make decisions as small as
getting up in the mornings to choosing where to go for college. I really enjoy the process that
was described to apply to different situations. The first she mentions is to identify the dilemmas,
problems or issues that arise. This allows us to accept that we are currently facing a challenge.
The second that is mentioned is determining the goal. Determining the goal allows us to
understand the truth of the matter and how we can reach an end goal. The third one is to come up
with alternate solutions. Coming up with alternate solutions allows us for higher chances and
rates for success. The fourth mentioned in the text is to consider how these alternative solutions
might work. Again, this offers for more success and allows for how you can choose to have an
open mindset towards the situations that may be coming your way. The fifth suggestion given is
to select a solution to try. This allows us to be decisive and to follow through with the options we
come up with. Finally, the last suggestion given was to evaluate the outcome and if it’s not
working, to try something else. Doing this allows us to grow resiliency and a sense of
determination. These are all beneficial because it can allow yourself and your children to be able
to think for themselves and allows them to be able to develop their own skills that they will need
for critical thinking.
There were a lot of suggestions on how you can build critical thinking in your own
children. The very first suggestion that is given is to watch your child forming theories about
how things work. This allows you to be able to read them in a way that you can benefit from so
you can know how to help them if they struggle in any way. The second suggestion given is to
promote your child’s curiosity. This suggestion is important because curiosity is a way that
children learn, grow and develop. The third suggestion is to promote your children’s lemonade
stands. This is important because children need to feel supported and loved in their endeavors.
These were the suggestions that stuck out to me the most and the ones I could see myself
benefiting from in the future.
