Writing Plan
The argument I will be addressing in my essay is juveniles in the justice system should
receive rehabilitative treatment as opposed to receiving adult sentences. This is important to my
major as many individuals who are in this career field will or have had experience with juveniles
who are involved in the criminal justice system. Ultimately, the system is meant to serve justice
where it is due, but there are also situations (such as working with juveniles) where this
philosophy may not be beneficial. I feel as though individuals in this field need to be as educated
as possible on the most effective and beneficial ways to deter crime as well as rehabilitate those
who need it.
This topic is debatable. While I agree with the side of advocating for juveniles to receive
rehabilitative care as opposed to adult punishment/sentence, some individuals believe violent
youths should receive the same sentence as adults who commit similar crimes.
The audience I will be writing to is individuals on the side of giving juveniles who
commit violent crimes adult sentences/punishments. I believe there could be some challenges
writing to this audience, especially regarding juveniles who may be around 16-17 years of age. I
can see how it could be argued that juveniles of this age are almost adults and should understand
the actions they are doing and the crimes they are committing. It could also be argued that
sentencing juveniles in the same way we do adults could be more of a deterrent and fewer
juveniles would commit crimes because the punishment is so severe.
I am hoping to successfully convey my side of this argument using multiple sources for
research and evidence. I want this essay to come across as informationally persuasive as opposed
to using too much emotion. I feel as though when individuals see the facts and evidence that
have been compiled across multiple sources, it is more convincing and easier to argue your side
of a debate.
Point 1:
Developmental considerations: relating developmental stages and the cruciality of the
juvenile years of an individual's life. More susceptible to change during these years than when
they are adults.
Point 2:
Incarceration is expensive. Tax dollars going toward prison costs. Many youths who are
incarcerated once are likely to recidivate and offend multiple times. This translates to more tax
dollars going toward these individuals to house them and ensure their basic needs are met while
in prison.
Point 3:
Rehabilitation and community programs are shown to be more effective than
incarceration, reducing recidivism. Many of these programs aim to get to the “root of the
problem”, or what may be causing this juvenile to commit the crime. Once there is a better
understanding, rehabilitation for the individual can begin.

This source will support my argument by providing examples of different methods of
rehabilitation and programs. This article also discusses the rationale behind using these programs
for juveniles as opposed to sending them to prison. This will also provide me with information
on the benefits of rehabilitating juveniles. By using this information I am hoping to convey that
rehabilitation for juveniles is beneficial and reduces recidivism rates.

This source will support me in discussing the financial efficacy (or lack thereof) of
incarcerating juveniles who have committed crimes. This source incorporates research, evidence,
polls, and data to back up the claims stated in this article. This will hopefully assist in conveying
to the reader that rehabilitation is more cost-effective and overall more beneficial than
incarcerating youth.
I plan to integrate evidence in this essay by using multiple trusted sources so I can back
up my claims. I am hoping to find resources with infographics or things of the like, studies that
have been conducted, etc. I plan to use resources that include authors who have also used
multiple reliable sources to back up the claims that they make in their writing. Through my
essay, I hope to use data gathered from credible sources to help in my argument that show that
rehabilitation for juveniles reduces recidivism and benefits the individual.
I used the instructor's feedback to find further credible sources, expand on the topics I
have already covered, and be more descriptive in my plan. While most of this stayed the same
from my previous assignment, I was able to reflect and add a bit more information to certain
sections of this plan.
