1. What are some of the key parts of IDEA?
The video,
Individuals with disabilities Education act: Explained (2016)
, highlights some
of the key parts of IDEA like its original name, how it is free, how it includes parent
involvement, and that it falls under confidentiality protection. As specified in the Individuals
with Disabilities Act, children with disabilities must receive free and appropriate education
(FAPE). Children with disabilities must have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) to ensure
that they make progress in school. It is the responsibility of the parents, teachers, administration,
and related service providers to ensure that students receive the necessary accommodations and
related services. In addition to being confidential, an IEP is also legally binding. IDEA has
another purpose of educating students in the least restrictive environment (LRE), with the goal of
moving them into regular classrooms. In accordance with the IDEA, students with disabilities are
protected from being punished because of their disabilities. In addition to transitional services,
students receive assistance in adjusting to the workplace. IDEA provides rights for parents as
well. Before the evaluation process can begin, parents' consent is required.
2. Discuss four of the categories of SWD that you believe you will see most frequently.
The video,
Students with disabilities: Special education categories (2018)
, clearly
explained the 14 categories of students with disabilities and offered various teaching strategies
specific to that category of disability. As a teacher, I will most likely encounter students with
developmental delays. While working in early learning centers and elementary schools, I often
encountered students who needed early intervention services. Speech therapy is commonly
provided as part of these services. The likelihood of seeing speech language impairment is
therefore high. Additionally, it is common to see students with intellectual disabilities. It is
common for special education students to receive special education teacher support services
(SETSS), in which they are provided with individual lessons as well as small groups in specific
subjects. Due to increasing awareness and prevalence of autism, I am also likely to encounter
students with the disability most frequently.
3. What aspects of the Special Ed. Classroom impressed you the most? What aspects did not
resonate with you?
My favorite thing about her classroom was that it was warm, colorful, and inviting. In the
video,
Special education classroom tour (2019)
, there was a lot of information on her bulletin
boards, as well as inspirational quotes and messages. In the classroom, desks were arranged in
small groups so that students could work together. Additionally, I was impressed with her reading
area, which appeared to be a cozy place for students to read independently and sit alone at times.
There were several bulletin signs that I found too high for children with special needs, especially
those who use wheelchairs or who have visual impairments. Additionally, I wish she had
provided a place for the large group instruction where students could sit together.
