Kant Aristotle forum
Briana McGill
According to Aristotle and his theory he believed good people have good hearts and are smart,
they know what’s right and wrong and strive to do the right thing. Aristotle introduced normative
ethics and how its main point is explaining what is right and what is wrong and the rules for
making a moral decision.

“It is concerned with the articulation and the justification of the
fundamental principles that govern the issues of how we should live and what we morally ought
to do. Its most general concerns are providing an account of moral evaluation and, possibly,
articulating a decision procedure to guide moral action.” Every person has a purpose and having
reason. Aristotle argues that nature has built us to be virtuous, so this means doing the right
thing, and having good judgment.

“And if any action is
well performed when it is performed in accordance with the appropriate excellence: if this is the
case, human good turns out to be activity of soul in accordance with virtue, and if there are more
than one virtue, in accordance with the best and most complete.” Next according to Kants
categorical imperative Kant believed if you were about to do something then you need to stop
and think if its okay for everyone else to do, and your actions are a rule for everyone not just
yourself. Kant goes on to say
THE CATEGORICAL IMPERATIVE. kants-groundwork-excerpt
“When I conceive a hypothetical imperative, in general I do not know beforehand what it will
contain until I am given the condition. But when I conceive a categorical imperative, I know at
once what it contains. For as the imperative contains besides the law only the necessity that the
maxims1 shall conform to this law, while the law contains no conditions restricting it, there
remains nothing but the general statement that the maxim of the action should conform to a
universal law, and it is this conformity alone that the imperative properly represents as
necessary.” This means that the two hypotheticals depend on some of the conditions and
categorical is direct rules. The ultimate point is to act how you’d want everyone else to act.
Aristotle and Kant highlight the importance of recognizing one’s limits and acting in accordance
with rational principles. Aristotle and Kant in this situation would believe that your moral actions
should contribute to your own flourishing overall and recklessly risking your own life in a
situation that you are not prepared for is not conductive to your own well-being. This scenario
particle wisdom would involve recognizing your own limitations and not engaging in a
potentially life-threatening rescue attempt instead one should focus on actions that promote your
own well-being and develop your own virtues.
