Senator John Cornyn 1. Find one vote you disagree with. He voted against the Great American Outdoors Act o Describe the issue being voted on and what the vote means. It provides full and permanent funding of $900 million annually for the Land and Water Conservation Fund and funding to address the deferred maintenance backlog in our national parks and other public lands. o What do you disagree with and why? I disagree with him voting no on this subject because it would really benefit our national parks. o What are the potential negative environmental/social/economic impacts of the vote? Putting more land under government control makes it easier for special interest groups to restrict beneficial multiple uses such as ranching, mining, energy production, and the building of transmission infrastructure or pipelines. o Now argue for the opposite perspective. List a few of the potential positive environmental/social/economic impacts. Just a few of the potential positives would include Creating jobs, protecting the environment, repairing, and upgrading infrastructure and facilities, and protecting resources. The list could go on. 2. Find one vote you agree with. Undermining Environmental Review and Mandating Gas Pipeline o Describe the issue being voted on and what the vote means. This amendment would allow a broad spectrum of energy-related projects to short-circuit environmental review and public input, curtail judicial review, hand project developers veto power over comment period extensions, and require agencies to approve the unnecessary and harmful methane gas Mountain Valley Pipeline, among other damaging actions.
o What do you agree with and why? I agree with it because it will require agencies to approve the unnecessary methane gas. o What are the potential positive environmental/social/economic impacts of your stance? It would allow undermining Environmental Review and Mandating Gas Pipeline. o The League of Conservation Voters advocates a particular position because they hold a particular worldview and a specific environmental ethical philosophy. Pipelines can pollute air, water, soil, and climate when they leak. 3. The League of Conservation Voters advocates a particular position because they hold a particular worldview and a specific environmental ethical philosophy. o Did you find cases where you would take a different position than theirs? If so, what did you disagree with and why? He voted against Eminent Domain. I would have voted for it because it can be a positive thing. Eminent domain is the right of the government to seize private land for public use. I can personally relate to this because eminent domain saved the state park in my hometown. Fairfield State Park was owned by the Big Brown power plant, making it privately owned land. Now that Big Brown shut down their power plant and sold the land it's no longer a state park. Fairfield tried to get eminent domain and succeeded in saving our state park. Based on your readings in chapter one, describe the LCV's ethical worldview. Their vision is a world where the climate crisis is tackled, environmental injustice is confronted, democracy is strengthened, communities are cleaner and healthier, jobs are good and well-paying, and the future is just, equitable, and sustainable for all. 4. Select one of the bills and explain how you think the passage of the bill might influence the environmental health of the people in Texas, the economic state of Texas, and the plants and wildlife of Texas. If Public Lands Protection got passed it would allow recreation public lands, including parks, trails, beaches, and open spaces, to represent spaces for all to enjoy in Texas.
