Introduction & overview
: My topic for this course is social media beneficial or
harmful to mental health. I want to look at the impact of social media on people that suffer from
mental health or can social media cause mental health. We may feel that social media helps us
stay connected whether it is social media, but disproportionate use of social media has been
connected to an escalation of depression, alienation, self-destructiveness, restlessness, and
suicidal ideations. The more social media communications that are idealized over in-person
relationships. It explains how social media can affect our mental health. Social media can impact
us with depression, anxiety, and comparing our life to others. We also see how people can cyber
bully others into committing suicide. This article can help us see the good and bad of social
media and mental health and the impacts it has on us as an individual. Social media also helps us
reach out to other kinds of people and social communities. Helps you promote awareness for
different causes and raise money to help them.
Personal connection:
This article hits home with me, not only does mental health
impact my life but other family members I have. Social media helps me keep in contact with
family that lives in other states and family I cannot see all the time. Mental health is a very
important topic for me. I deal with it every day all day and it is hard. Social media helps and does
not at the same time. Social media helps me keep in contact with friends and family. It also has
writings that I can relate to and help me understand my feelings that are put into words. Social
media also has me seeing how well others are doing and I end up getting depressed because I am
struggling, and they are doing great.
Primary Argument &
key facts, research, or resources:
In this article the primary
argument of limitless social media use presents the possibility of psychological and emotional
welfare for people. We see that social media seems to threaten a person’s prosperity. Another

article states, “three goals that must be achieved if democracy is to remain viable. We must
harden democratic institutions so they can withstand chronic anger and mistrust, reform social
media so it becomes less socially corrosive and better prepare the next generation for democratic
citizenship in this new age” (Haidt, 2022). First, “For example, your social media use may be
problematic if it causes you to neglect face-to-face relationships, distracts you from work or
school, or leaves you feeling envious, angry, or depressed. Similarly, if you’re motivated to use
social media just because you’re bored or lonely or want to post something to make others
jealous or upset, it may be time to reassess your social media habits” (Robinson & Smith, 2022).
Secondly “Cyberbullying. About 10 percent of teens report
being bullied
on social media and
many other users are subjected to offensive comments. Social media platforms such as Twitter
can be hotspots for spreading hurtful rumors, lies, and abuse that can leave lasting emotional
scars” (Robinson & Smith, 2022). Third is “The more you’re rewarded, the more time you want
to spend on social media, even if it becomes detrimental to other aspects of your life” (Robinson
& Smith, 2022).
Logic and Reasoning:
After figuring out the main argument, premises, and the
conclusion, I went over the articles one more time to identify any possible biases. Searching for
indicator words, but it turns out that this argument deductive. The conclusion of social media can
be determined to people’s mental health directly follows the premises I brought up earlier. The
argument is also valid and sound for the subsequent reasons, that the premises are true, then the
conclusion is true it makes the argument true as well by factors previously stated. I do not
identify any weaknesses or gaps presented. All the key facts I have stated in the previous
paragraph, that social media has online bullying, you feel rewarded when you get a like or a
