Intro to the Theater Spotlight (p. 48) Describe the concept of COLOR-BLIND Casting. Color-blind casting is the practice where actors are chosen for roles based on their performance and suitability rather than considering their race, gender, or ethnic background. This practice is very popular in the entertainment industry because it promotes diversity, inclusivity, and aims to reflect the diverse realities of society. State and defend your position on the benefits and drawbacks to implementing color- blind casting when casting actors for a show. Just like any other practice color blind casting has its pros and cons. First of all, the idea behind color blind casting is to promote inclusivity by giving every actor from different ethnic backgrounds an equal opportunity to audition for roles. I think that this is a good idea because it helps the entertainment industry to be more diverse and provides more representation for different ethnic groups. Another thing that is good about this practice is that talent and the quality of the performance of a role are the primary criteria regardless of the actors racial or ethnic background. A good example would be Disney’s live-action adaptation of “The Little Mermaid”; the casting of Halle Bailey was based on her performance and not her race. One drawback of color-blind casting is that some shows or movies with deeply rooted cultural or historical contexts may require actors who are share that background to carry the nuances of the narrative. Overall, the concept of color-blind casting is a good idea, but as any other practice, it has its pros and cons. Spotlight (pp. 57-58) Why do you think there was such a negative response from some people to the painting of the Holy Virgin Mary by English Artist, Chris Ofili? I think that the negative response to Chirs Ofili’s painting of the Holy Virgin Mary can be attributed to its provocative nature that challenged traditional religious representation. Some people found it blasphemous and disrespectful. Sensitivity of religious themes, unfamiliarity with contemporary art, and artistic provocation all contributed to negative reaction surrounding the painting. According to the text, how might negative responses to art be avoided? In the text, the author states that artists can avoid negative responses to their work if people decide to turn their assumptions into questions. The audience should accept that anybody can express themselves the way they want and create what they want.
Agree or disagree with the idea that artists’ freedom to create is an important part of a pluralistic society? I agree. I think that everybody should have freedom of expression, which is one of the values of a pluralistic society. But just like this old saying “Your liberty to swing your fist ends just where my nose begins,” people have to understand that having freedom to create what they want doesn’t means that they can insult and offend other people. Ethnocentrism question This is not an assumption that I made about someone’s culture but was made about mine. When I first came here from my home country (the Congo), people asked me a lot of questions about how life was back there. And someone assumed that I live a poor life in a poor country. That made me feel bad because they didn’t even give me a chance to explain to them how it is back home. I would have preferred the person to ask me and I would have answered their question. Spotlight (p.54) Does the government have the right to favor certain points of view? Why or why not? This question is hard to answer because there are pros and cons. I think that the government shouldn’t favor a certain point of view because one fundamental principle in many democratic societies is the freedom of expression. The government should limit or favor certain points of view because that’s violating the freedom of right. But one pro is that favoring certain opinions promotes common values needed for the well-being of everybody. Does the NEA have the right to exclude grant applicants because they are not in tune with the dominant culture? Why or why not? No because doing that doesn’t promote freedom of expression, which is a fundamental right protected by law. Also, excluding grant applicants because they are not in tune with the dominant culture is equal to discrimination. The government agencies are expected to adhere to principles of non-discrimination. Is it possible to make a work of art that respects all the “diverse beliefs and values of the American public”? Why or why not? Creating a work of art that respects all diverse beliefs and values of the American public is hard because of the wide range of perspectives, conflicts, and misunderstanding in art interpretation.
