RUNNING HEAD: PRINCIPLES AND POWER IN LEADERSHIP Principles and Power in Leadership Erica Rosa South University LEA5125: Leadership Ethics, Culture, and Politics Professor Ted Sun January 30, 2023
2 Principles and Power in Leadership Introduction Balancing systemic organization objectives in a healthcare setting has become more challenging for leaders in the last decade. Since the beginning of COVID-19, effective leadership has identified innovative alternatives in providing healthcare services. Reflecting the many demands of health reform, the pace of change is so rapid that many healthcare leaders have left the field, and many health professionals are considering whether to follow ( Porter-O'Grady, 2014). However, some individuals are born to lead, while others learn from mentorship and experience. These are some characteristics of a strong leader apart from a supervisor or a manager. Every successful leader intends to inspire others to reach the organization's goals. A leader takes a more active role versus a passive approach to pursue the organization's success. The purpose of this paper is to focus on the leadership principles and guidelines needed for leaders to thrive. Some concepts in leadership are the fundamentals to inspire and motivate others to achieve the ultimate organization objectives. Key Details of Chosen Leader The leader of focus in this project is Jennifer Pacilletti, JFK Medical Center's Advanced Heart Failure Nurse Practitioner (APRN) in Atlantis, Florida (Nurse Practitioner in Atlantis, FL , n.d.). Jennifer began her journey as a registered nurse with JFK Medical Center cardiovascular intensive care in 2009. In 2013, she advanced as an educator after obtaining her Master of Science in nursing education. In 2016, Jennifer became a ventricular assist device coordinator, where she developed policies and procedures to better help people before, during, and after therapy. In 2017, she became the first APRN in advanced heart failure at JFK Medical Center after completing a Post Master's Certification in Adult-Gerontology Advanced Practice
3 Registered Nurse. Later that year, she became an asset to the left ventricular assist device program (LVAD) by evaluating and advocating for candidates who met the criteria to obtain an advanced mechanical life support device. According to the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (2021), there are only five credentialed and certified LVAD centers in Florida. Leader's Alignment to the Four Universal Principles-Integrity Integrity is being honest and truthful and is considered one of the fundamentals of higher standards. However, according to Enwereuzor et al. (2020), conducted by professionals in the field of leadership, people who lack integrity also lack the moral conviction to lead effectively. Additionally, despite expertise, intelligence, and appeal without integrity, they're destined to fail as leaders. Integrity and honesty are crucial for an organization to grow. Individuals who hold on to their principles maintain accuracy based on their beliefs and values, no matter the price. Organizations can rely on leaders with integrity and are admired for their example . During COVID-19, the ECMO device was the new normal, and ECMO-trained nurses significantly departed. Yet, Jennifer provided ECMO clinical education to oncoming staff, making ECMO a form of ongoing treatment at JFK medical center. Potentially, fewer lives were lost during covid- 19 due to the clinical education and expertise Jennifer provided staff. According to the West Palm Beach local news report by Ryan Hughes (2022), a Tennessee police officer with COVID- 19 was flown to JFK Medical center and received life-saving treatment with an ECMO device in Palm Beach County. Responsibility Responsible leadership may be described as overseeing an institution's contacts with the public to satisfy the needs of the company's stakeholders and improve the organization's current, social, and environmental standings (Tefera et al., 2019). Moreover, a leader is a mediator for the
4 patient, the staff, and the organization. Being a resource for quality decision-making is essential in a position of authority, especially in a leadership role where life-changing choices influence human life expectancy, hospital program accreditations, and staffing productivity. Speaking out to facilitate these expectations toward corporate executives is needed to prevent unethical demands. Therefore, a responsible leader can handle all situations and fulfill their commitments. Aside from being truthful, Jennifer displays the fundamentals of a responsible leader. Jennifer provides certification courses for Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), Left advanced ventricular device (LVAD), and other mechanical heart devices to staff and physicians. ECMO is a temporary automated support system that pumps and oxygenates blood outside the body to allow the heart and lungs to rest due to trauma, injury, and or inability for lungs and heart to function. In 2021, JFK medical center was awarded the   Silver Level ELSO   Award from the Extracorporeal Life support organization. ELSO is an international nonprofit consortium of healthcare centers and individuals dedicated to developing, evaluating, and improving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and other innovative therapies to support failing organ systems in infants, children, and adults (JFK Hospital and Emergency Rooms n.d.). Compassion Compassionate leaders mitigate by helping those who can't help themselves, such as alleviating suffering. One way they show organizational compassion is by protecting their peers from the negative aspects of high-stress demands and caring for others' well-being. Empathy emphasizes sensing the feelings of others. Trust, commitment, active listening, reducing anxiety and fear, and using holistic and creative thinking toward yourself and others are intricate parts of compassion.
