Guiding Question 2
Why does Coates call Malcolm X a "political pragmatist?" Why do you think Coates is
drawn to Malcolm X's message over that of civil rights leaders who preached nonviolence? Do
you think US society should celebrate Malcolm X's legacy like we celebrate Martin Luther King
Jr.'s legacy? Explain your response.
Coates may view Malcolm's ability to adapt as a display of pragmatism. His initial advocacy
for Black separatism eventually transformed into Pan-Africanism, illustrating a shift in
perspective. Rather than being opportunistic, this strategic approach sought liberation through
various means. In contrast to certain leaders' unyielding commitment to nonviolence, Malcolm's
versatility could be interpreted as pragmatic thinking.
Coates' interest in Malcolm possibly arises from various factors. In contrast to nonviolent
ideologies that required Black individuals to be subservient, Malcolm's message struck a chord
with the simmering rage and despair hidden beneath the surface. He was courageous enough
to voice what many experienced: an justified loathing for their oppressors. For Coates who grew
up in a society where Black outrage was often viewed as abnormal, it is probable that he took
comfort in hearing Malcolm's unwavering tone of expression without any apologies attached.
Is it appropriate to honor Malcolm in the same manner as Martin Luther King Jr.? Both
were pivotal figures with contrasting approaches. King's dream of racial harmony felt distant to
some, while Malcolm advocated for Black self-determination and empowerment through radical
means if necessary. Indeed, each merit commendation but for varying causes.
Malcolm X left a legacy that is difficult to classify. He was not easily defined, as he had
both a practical and fiery demeanor which diverged from the norm; something few dared to do.
Coates' admiration serves as an essential reminder: diversity of voices - even those perceived
radical or uncomfortable- are crucial in pursuing racial justice. By examining these figures
critically, we can continue fighting for creating a more just future ahead of us.
