Hannah Collins 8/20/2020 PED-230-01 Assignment 1 Health, Physical Activity, and Individuals with Ability Differences 1. Do you believe that individuals with disabilities are more socially accepted now than in the past? How so? Provide one example to support your belief. I believe that individuals with disabilities are more socially accepted now than in the past because of the inclusion of them in sports, activities and social environments. The Special Olympics has been prominent in the inclusion and representation of individuals with disabilities since 1976. This is an inspiring example and innovative in the perception of individuals with disabilities because it showcases the abilities of them rather than their lack thereof. The Special Olympics is just one of many platforms that embraces individuals with differences rather than discriminating. 2. Upon beginning the course, how might you have defined disability? After reading chapter 1, which lens do you believe you might have looked through related to disability? Before this course I defined disability as a limitation of an individual in some sense. After reading chapter 1, I was definitely defining individuals with a disability through the medical lens. The medical lens defines individuals with a disability as a deficiency or limitation. I can ultimately see the overall issue with the perspective I have with individuals with disabilities through this perspective because it disregards the environment they are in. 3. How does an inclusive physical activity philosophy differ from previous beliefs about physical activity and ability? The inclusive physical activity philosophy is to ensure that all individuals, at any age or ability, have an equal opportunity in physical activity. This differs from previous beliefs because the physical activity philosophy has a more incorporated and inclusive approach rather than a divided and categorized. For example, the social minority model uses the consequences of societal attitudes and prejudices as barriers for individuals with disabilities. This in turn ignores the personal experience that the individual with the disability could be facing.
