Case Study Analysis Template
1. Write a summary of the case.
This article discusses the incorporation of mindfulness into modern businesses around Silicon Valley in order to make the work place a better, less stressful place. Businesses like Google and
Facebook have adopted the Buddhist idea to push self-improvement and personal growth into the workplace. These companies push this while leaving the Buddhist part out of it for the most part in order to provide clients with a religion free option, but critics of the topic argue that these tactics are just to ease the minds of workers not necessarily actually help them. Critics also say that leaving Buddhism out of the topic and more so using it to help their business is undermining
to the religion itself.
2. Who are the stakeholders involved in the case?
- Companies like Google that are practicing mindfulness
- Employees of these companies
- Practicing Buddhists
- People working for and offering the mindfulness services
- Activists for and against the integration of mindfulness in training
- Local communities and residents of Silicon Valley
- Amanda Ream
3. Describe the dilemmas evident in the case. What are the key problems and why do they exist? Describe the religious elements that come into play. What considerations have to be balanced?
The dilemma in this case is whether the way mindfulness is being advertised and practiced in the Silicon Valley is respectful to the Buddhist religion. The key issues are that the capitalist side of the Silicon Valley is trying to take religion out of an idea that is a big part of a religion and that can be seen as demeaning towards that religion. In order to have some balance for the topic we need to consider the different point of views like how because these companies are trying to leave religion out of it then they probably don’t mean any disrespect. On
the other side which would be the religious side of it just because they’re turning a blind eye doesn’t necessarily make it ok.
4. What are the possible solutions to the case study dilemma?
There are a couple different solutions one being to just leave it as is. As of right now no one is actually getting hurt and everyone could just continue to do there own thing. Another solution would be to ban the practice of mindfulness in the work place unless there was to be some sort of lesson behind it teaching those who wish to still practice mindfulness about its origins in this case specifically its Buddhist origins. Another solution would be to sit down with someone like Amanda Ream and figure out what that side of this case would like to happen. I don’t believe she specifically states a solution in the article but that would be a way to find out what they aim to get out of the situation and then we could take action from there.
5. Of the possible solutions, what solution do you think is best overall, and why? Of the possible solutions, which do you think offers the most religious autonomy?
I believe my last solution of sitting down with multiple people from the Buddhist side of this case
to figure out what they aim to gain from this. I think that would be the best way religiously to get past this issue since it would allow us to act on what they actually want which is respect to be shown for there religion and it’s practices.
