Olivia Edey March 17, 2024 IT-412 2-2 Short Paper: A Moral Theory A moral theory is how a person determines right and wrongful conduct. There are many different forms of moral theories. The theory that stuck out to me was the moral subjectivism. Moral Subjectivism is when, “Right and wrong is determined by what you -- the subject -- just happens to think (or 'feel') is right or wrong” (The Nature of Morality and Moral Theories) . I find that although this may not be the best approach at determining what may be right or wrong, I personally find myself subscribing to this particular method. The pros to this particular theory would be similar to that of Kantian Theory (“Right and wrong is determined by rationality, giving universal duties. Kantianism is a Non-consequentialist moral theory.”), in the sense that if the person is a “good” person and have good intentions, there moral compass will typically point them in the right direction (The Nature of Morality and Moral Theories) . For example, a person sees another person drop their wallet. They currently are struggling financially; however, they believe that it is wrong to steal under any circumstance, so instead of pocketing it, they call out to the person to return it. The cons of this would be the exact same, except with a person who is “bad”. Instead of returning the wallet, they determine that it would be morally right to keep the wallet because they are currently in more need of the money than the person who it rightfully belongs to. We see this in our society all the time, specifically in our governments and our laws. Some abortion laws seem to be a mix of Moral Subjectivism and Devine Command Theory, which is more tied with religion. But the point being is our Government decides for the bodies of women based on what they feel are right or wrong.

As for how Moral Subjectivism works with moral dilemmas within the cyberspace, we have major hacking groups, such as Anonymous who have been using the cyber world to attack and hack whoever they believe goes against their own personal morals. They have been seen going after the Church of Scientology as early as 2008 and even more recently (Zulhusni, 2023) . In 2022, they participated in major hack attacks against Russia as a result of Russia invading Ukraine (Zulhusni, 2023) . While majority of people may not agree with the Church of Scientology or even Russia’s invasion, they may also not agree with a cyber-vigilante team taking the law into their own hands, however, Anonymous has already decided that the people they are attacking are wrong, therefore their attacks are right.
