In the first 2 weeks of this course, you learned about factors that can influence the effectiveness of critical thinking. This week, you learn about the effects of social errors, biases, and fallacies. These elements are helpful in persuasion. After completing the Learning Activities for the week, please respond to all the inquires below. Your response should be a minimum of 175 words total (approx. 50 words per question). Review the Four Social Errors and Biases presented in Ch. 4 of THiNK: Critical Thinking and Logic Skills for Everyday Life . Which of the social errors/biases in the book are you most affected by? How can you overcome this social error/bias? I believe that the bias that I am most affected by is the self-serving bias. I can sometimes think that I have control of things that I certainly cannot control. I was in a traumatic head-on car accident when I was almost 17 weeks pregnant. I ended up losing the baby and I was left with injuries and no vehicle. For years, I always blamed myself for it even though it was not my fault, and I had no control over what happened. This bias then turned into Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It has gotten better over the years but has not completely faded away. I think to overcome this bias you would have to make an honest evaluation of yourself and become more self-aware. Doing this will help you to overcome this bias. Also, I think that you would have to put the “I am in control of anything and everything” attitude and just realize that you cannot control everything and that things happen for a reason. Ch. 5 describes fallacies (when an argument seems to be correct but isn't). What is one fallacy you have personally used or seen in an argument? Discuss how critical thinking skills will make you less likely to be influenced by arguments that are based on fallacies and faulty reasoning. One fallacy that I have seen used in a previous relationship was the ad hominem fallacy. Most of the time the type of ad hominem fallacy was abusive where it directly attacked my character. I believe that critical thinking skills can help in arguments based on fallacies and faulty reasoning and can make you less likely to be influenced by it, is to use good communication and listening. Reflect on the learning activities, concepts, ideas, and topics covered this week. Discuss the most interesting activity or concept you learned this week and mention any concepts that are still a bit confusing to you or that you have questions about. The most interesting concepts that I learned this week were the fallacies. Reason being, I had no idea that some of the fallacies existed. Reading about fallacies gave me a new understanding and knowledge. Also, learning about the different biases as well. I did not realize that I had a bias and that I had used a fallacy before. None of the concepts are confusing and I have no further questions regarding the readings for this week.
