CHAPTER 14 DISCUSSIONS
1.
PATIENT RIGHTS
Review the Patient Rights in Pozgar and select which right you think is the greater good. Why? I think that the right to courtesy, respect, dignity, and timely, responsive attention to his
or her needs, are very important because to me, that is what makes me feel safe and heard when I go see a doctor.
Which right does Pozgar thinK is the greater good? Why? Utilitarian ethics. Utilitarianism holds that the most ethical choice
is the one that will produce the greatest good for the greatest number.
2.
PATIENT RESPONSIBILITIES
Review the Patient Rights in Pozgar and select 3 responsibilities and describe the importance of each. 2- Considerate and respectful care. 4- Receive information about the illness, the course of treatment and prospects for recovery in terms that the patient can understand. 13- Be informed of continuing healthcare
requirements following discharge from the hospital.
Number 2, I think it’s important because it covers a lot of other rules. No discrimination, no disrespect, no judgement. Number 4, its important to communicate with the patient the way they will understand. I think only people in the medical field understands medical terms, so when talking to a patient, doctors should explain to patients what are their illnesses, diagnoses, treatment and side effects in a way they’ll understand. That way patients can make their own decisions about their care.
Number 13- I hear and I read a lot about how patients are discharged to only get worse at home because they don’t know what to do to keep with their treatment, and they end up going back to the hospital and sometimes even worse, they die. So making sure the patients are discharged fully educated on their on going treatment is very important.
Why must people maintain healthy lifestyles as they get older?
As people age, muscle and organ function often decline. It is
important to maintain a healthy lifestyle, not only as people get
old but thought your life, so that you have less healthy issues in
the future. Some of the benefits of staying active and healthy as
you get older include increasing wellbeing and participation,
recovering from illness more quickly, reducing the risk of getting
chronic disease, and preventing falls.

Review Page 384, RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES CONFLICT, in your textbook.
Answer the Ethical and Legal Issues at the end. Therapeutic privilege. It was a lit bit confusing reading that case because it felt like the court was going back and forth on their decision as if the Dr. held
information from the patient or not. But to my understanding, at the end of the case, the court stated that the jury should have said that the Doctor didn’t provide enough information for the patient to decide whether she should’ve gone to the emergency room or not. So the court send the case back to trial.
I think this is a complicated case because the doctor told her what to do and that he would meet her at the emergency room. And after telling her what they might do to her she decided not to go. The doctor was trying to see her, he couldn’t tell, over the phone, what was wrong with her. If it was something more serious or not.
At the patients’ point of view, what the doctor told her didn’t sound like a big deal, so she decided to not go. If the doctor had said that what she was feeling was dangerous and that she must go to the emergency room, maybe her decision would be different.
